ENG 225: Introduction to Film -WK Dis 2

Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.

Prepare

Mise en scène is a term meant to encompass the arrangement and use of a variety of design elements in creating the visual theme of a film. Please look through Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors) for more information on this term.

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors).
  • Review the grading rubric for this discussion.
  • Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.

Reflect

It can be easier to grasp the importance of the term mise en scène if we break it down into its component elements. This week, we’ll look at the impact of lighting choices on the creation of meaning in a film.

In any film, the intensity and direction of lighting will influence how an image is perceived by the viewer, and it can establish or enforce particular themes. Think back over films you have watched and consider how the use of lighting in key scenes helped establish the theme or tone.

Write

Please view the video Adding Pictures and Video to Discussions and Introductions for guidance on how to integrate multimedia with your response.

Using specific examples from your chosen film, write a post in which you

  • Identify the type of lighting used in the film (traditional three-point, high-key, or low-key) and assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme.
    • What are the benefits of the style of lighting used?
    • How did this technique contribute to the theme?
    • How was the lighting technique suited to the genre of the film? For example, documentary films tend to rely on natural light as a way of creating an overall tone of authenticity.
  • Compare how the scene would play if different choices had been made.

You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

It is suggested that you approach this post by focusing your attention on the same film you will write about in this week’s “Genres and Genre Film” assignment.

Two set of discussions questions to post for MBA level Human Resource Management Online!

(Week 6) Two set of discussions questions to post for MBA level Human Resource Management Online!

Please Read Instructions First:   This assignment for discussions questions “does not” require APA style.  I have to post to discussion board for an online class.  I attached an “example format for discussion questions” so you can see how the discussions questions should be formatted and  answered.  All work should be original with no plagiarism and in proper English grammar.  The responses should include answering the main discussion questions, fully, including proper cites as well.  If you use citations, I should be able to look it up online to find where you got it from.  (USE ALL AMERICAN PUBLICATIONS, CITATIONS AND RESOURCES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT!)  The professor requires that the questions be restated and then answered for the discussion questionsI highlighted the questions in “red, bold, italic and underlined” so you would know exactly which ones to restate and answer.  If this is not done, it is his option to deduct formatting points and I could get a “0” for the work.  The more in-depth the information is, the better, as long as you fully answer each set of discussions questions.  Discussion Questions Set 1 should be about two pages including restating the questions.  Discussion Questions Set 2 should be about two pages including restating the questions.

1.  Discussion Questions Set 1 “Performance Appraisals” Please respond to the following:

·         Determine why organizations can have higher productivity when top managers encourage supervisors to set goals, assess performance, and provide feedback to employees.  Support your answer with examples. Then, describe the experience you have had with performance appraisals and how your performance has been influenced by them.

·         Go to businessballs’ Website and review the information regarding performance appraisals.  Next, rate the importance of measuring performance and providing an opportunity for feedback. Support your position.

·         Class, in an article published by ClearCompany, the author listed five (5) tips to align performance management and goal setting for the employees.  They are below:

1.  align employee goals with company goals;

2.  collaborate with employees to set goals;

3.  make performance goals attainable;

4.  increase engagement with career discussions; and,

5.  recognize goal achievement, or lack thereof.

Now, how do we link the job analysis with the above factors to design and administer an effective performance management system?

2.  Discussion Questions Set 2 “Performance Measurement” Please respond to the following:

·         Imagine you are working at an ice cream shop.  It is the middle of summer, the shop’s busiest season, and the electricity goes out during a storm.  Rank the actions that you should take in order of importance, as your performance will be measured regarding your immediate actions.

·         Assess the advantages and / or disadvantages of having more than one source of performance measurement within a company.  Support your position with examples.  Of the performance measurement sources you provided, select one that you believe your current or previous company could benefit from and explain why.

·         Class, when we discuss performance measurement in HR we must be very specific in what we are discussing, and defining, as it impacts on what we measure.  There are many types of performance measures that HR can draw upon such as, MBO, KPI, and Metrics.  You know measurement is only accurate if you are measuring the right thing.  For example, if you wanted to know how fast a car was going in the US you would measure MPH v. KPH.  Measuring KPH would give you a number, but the number would not be accurate because it does not answer the question.  When you look at picking a performance management measurement you must consider how that measurement supports the business unit’s, and organizations, goals.  Now, herein lies the problem having more than two (2) performance measurements in the organization can lead to confusion, especially when two (2) different measurements are used in the same skill.  This is not to say that two (2) different measurements cannot be used, however, it does say that there must be concern for equity in what is being measured.  Can you think of an example where you might use two (2) different measurements for your job?

Discussion Questions Set 1 “Training Assessment” Please respond to the following:

·         Imagine you are a new employee in a human resource (HR) department.  Your first task is to develop a stress management seminar for the employees.  Determine the topics that should be covered in the seminar. Support your selection of the topics.

·         Develop criteria to assist in selecting the vendor to use for the training.

·         Class, stress is the number 1 worker’s compensation claim today.  The reality is that today’ workplace is a stressful environment to be in.  Organizations that must run “lean and mean” to be profitable expect their employees to perform at a consistently higher rate with less resources.  Managers are underneath considerable stress to maximize profits, and efficiency, without increasing overhead.  The global market has demanded that innovation to be a such a level that organizations are challenged to keep up with their competitors.  Indeed, innovate or die, has taken on a whole new meaning.  Having said that, today’s forward looking organizations develop strategies that help employees deal with stress through introducing programs such as employee assistance plans, workplace wellness plans, social events, and open space working environments.  Google is a great example, they expect a lot of their employees, but have designed the work place to allow for “mental breaks” from the worker’s tasks.  Look at your own organization, or a past one, is it stressful?  If you were asked on ways to reduce the stress in the organization, what suggestions would you offer?

Discussion Questions Set 2 “Training Effectiveness” Please respond to the following:

·         Go to the Chief Learning Officer’s (CLO) Website and read the article titled “Southwest Airlines: Employee Education Takes Flight”.  Next, determine if Southwest’s method of training is an effective way to conduct training. Support your position. Provide one recommendation for improvement.

·         Compare the following training methods: presentations, case studies, simulations, and discussions. Determine which training method you believe to be the most effective and explain why.

·         Class, when we discuss training in today’s workplace HR must take a different approach than seen in prior years.  First, today’s worker looks for organizations that provide training.  The worker of today ties training to career growth and enhancement.  Secondly, the Internet has provided a new modality to how training is conducted.  Many organizations have implemented on-line training as a cost effective method to reach all their employees.  This is not to say that it is the most effective in terms of retention and skill transfer, but it is one of the most cost efficient.  The other issue that often plagues trainers is their approach.  If we were to look at training theory there are two (2) main schools, pedagogy which focuses on children, e.g. rote memory and andrology which is adult training.  Adult training focuses on application of skill, in other words, how can the worker apply what they have learned to their work place.  Take a look at adult learning theory, how does your understanding of adult learning theory influence your selection of training methods?

Do you agree with former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge when he says Americans need to “Dial Down” the hyperbole on Terrorism?

Tom Ridge: Americans Need to ‘Dial Down’ the Hyperbole on Terrorism

·         Tomdge

Sept. 16, 2016

Tom Ridge, founder and Chairman of Ridge Global, served as the 43rd Governor of Pennsylvania and was the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

It’s making us fear going into the world and doing what makes the country great

A frightening, yet isolated incident in New York City this week underscores a growing trend that I’m concerned will continue to have a lasting negative impact on the American psyche when it comes to coping with the threat of terrorism.

A man wielding a large cleaver not far from Penn Station slashed a detective in the head before being shot by police. It surely was a scary situation for anyone on that city block. Thankfully the officer is expected to survive. You would assume such an incident would be well covered by local media outlets in New York. And it was. But in this post-9/11 age—with concerns about ISIS-inspired lone-wolf attackers—an incident that would historically be considered only local news was the lead story on multiple national newscasts.

“This most recent incident, once again, triggers fears of lone-wolf attackers,” said one national television reporter, who then interviewed a crime analyst who asked whether this attacker may have been inspired or motivated by others. It is certainly reasonable to ask those questions. But let’s assume a terrorist did inspire the attacker. Does it change the result? For the officer in the hospital, does it really matter whether the man with the cleaver had a mental illness, was angry with law enforcement, read an article about radical Islam or none of the above? The breathlessness of the coverage—coverage that up until 15 years ago would have likely not extended beyond newscasts and newspapers in New York—is ratcheting up anxiety levels that is not healthy for our nation.

It turns out I made headlines the other day when I warned against “hyperventilation” over terrorist attacks. I had been invited to join a panel discussion with Secretary Jeh Johnson, one of my successors at the Department of Homeland Security. We were asked if we can expect another attack this year and how many. I think my answer surprised some in the audience. I said what I really think the country needs to do is accept the reality that terrorism is a global scourge and accept the reality that it will probably happen again. I’m not trying to say that the pain or suffering of a terrorist attack isn’t significant or isn’t real. As someone who has had the honor of being in the company of many of the Flight 93 families, I know it’s all too real and painful. But I want Americans to dial down some of the hyperbole and the hyperventilation. And our friends in the media can help.

The cleaver attack in New York is a perfect example. Every day across our country there are evildoers who attack innocent people. More than 500 people have been murdered so far this year in Chicago alone. These are not ISIS-inspired attacks. Social issues such as poverty, education, gang warfare and drug abuse are fueling these crimes. The media devotes coverage to deaths caused by terror attacks disproportionate to urban gun violence and even fatalities on our highways. By the end of this year, more than 40,000 Americans will likely die in car crashes. The number of Americans killed in 2016 by an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack is miniscule in comparison. More and more of what should be treated as local news is now national, or even international, news. Terrorism is often assumed as a motivator with accompanying graphics and music to play up the fear.

What’s missing is context. And without context, I fear that the American psyche—built over nearly 250 years on resilience and determination and resolve—stands to suffer. I worry that Americans, in the wake of real attacks such as in San Bernardino, combined with news reporting that inserts the specter of terrorism into the coverage of traditional violent crime in which terrorism is not a factor, will begin to shy away from the things that make our democracy great—travel, visiting public spaces and attending large events.

Perhaps no country has had to deal with the threat of terrorism more than our friends in Israel. In the wake of the recent Paris attacks, Israeli-American psychologist Alon Gratch wrote a powerful essay about how Israeli’s have learned how to expose themselves to the things that make them most anxious. “Avoiding public transportation, concert halls and shopping malls only exacerbates your anxiety, and factually speaking, it does not make you safer,” Gratch writes. He explains that the goal is not to eliminate anxiety but rather to reduce it to a tolerable level as some anxiety is essential for self-protection.

My hope is that all Americans will not be breathless about future threats, or the inevitable future attack, but instead continue to maintain proper vigilance and enjoy all that democracy offers. Let’s work together to make our nation safer, not only from the specter of terror but from all violent crimes and needless loss of life.

World Cultures II assignment 1

Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections  as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices

·         Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a  proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/descartes1637.pdf (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.

·         Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located at http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html

·         Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For the reading selection you choose:

1.       Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.

2.       Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

·         Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the Additional Resources section of their Student Center within their course shell for reference)

·         Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

·         Use the source(s) identified above for the topic you choose, focusing on the main primary source of that author. You may use additional sources also if they are of good academic quality for college papers (Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify). Use proper APA style in-text citing and also a matching APA style References list at the end.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

·         Explain how key social, cultural, and artistic contributions contribute to historical changes.

·         Explain the importance of situating a society’s cultural and artistic expressions within a historical context.

·         Examine the influences of intellectual, religious, political, and socio-economic forces on social, cultural, and artistic expressions.

·         Identify major historical developments in world cultures from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.

·         Use technology and information resources to research issues in the study of world cultures.

·         Write clearly and concisely about world cultures using proper writing mechanics.

Discuss one (1) project where you used a problem-solving approach to address what turned out to be common-cause variation, or where you used a process improvement approach to deal with a special cause.

If you do not have a personal experience that echoes either of these situations, you may use Internet to search for a case that reflects either of these situations.

Examples:

·                     one’s personal investment strategy since 2008

·                     reducing waiting times at the local hospital or emergency room

·                     reducing difficulties trying to connect to a Wi-Fi Internet provider

 Answer the following questions:

1.     Describe the experience in the project.

2.     What were the solutions used to address the problem?

3.     Was the case you described a special-cause or common-cause?

4.     Do you feel the solution or approach used appropriate for the cause?

5.     What would you do if you could do it again?

6.     What conclusions can you draw from the problem-solving or process-improvement techniques?

Note: You may create and / or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment. In your original work, you may use aspects of existing processes from either your current or a former place of employment. However, you must remove any and all identifying information that would enable someone to discern the organization(s) that you have used.

Managing Project Teams (Project)

MBA 6941 – Managing Project Teams (Project)

Scenario: You are the project manager responsible for a new building construction in northern Virginia. The building is worth $500,000 and will have five bedrooms, a kitchen, landscaping, and a two-car garage to be completed in two years. This was agreed upon in a firm fixed contract. During the execution (construction) of the building, you realize that the cost of materials have gone up by 10%, and your schedule is behind by 90 days due to delays from county inspections and permit processes. You also notice that if you continue with the current cost rate and schedule rate that the total cost to complete this house would be $600,000 and delivered three months late.

Submit a three-page report explaining the reasons for these variances from your original project management plan and the proposed steps on how you are going to control the cost and schedule to achieve the contract threshold of $500,000 to be delivered in two years. Your plan must include the following:

·         Address identifications of impacted activities with their cost and schedule attributes, remembering to account for contingencies.

·         Address explanations of the roles your project management team will play during the execution of your project management plan and how they will help you to control the issues that are arising during the project.

·          At the end of your essay, add a separate section entitled, “Reflections on My Learning.” In this stand-alone section, summarize what you have learned in doing the research, reading the textbook, and reading the written lessons in regard to project management and how it impacted your decisions in this essay.

Refer to the execution and control process examples in the Handbook of project-based management: Leading Strategic change in organizations textbook, Chapter 17. Include at least one additional source to support your ideas, thoughts, and theories. Use APA format to document your sources in-text and in your “References” list at the end of the essay
