Newton, Bower, and Williams (2004) outline the process of “devising and revising” a research question, be it descriptive, relational, or comparative. After reading their paper, write a three-page paper that addresses the following:

1.     How do descriptive research questions differ from questions of relationship? From questions of comparison?

2.     How should a researcher determine if prior research exists on her intended research topic?

3.     What factors should be used to gauge the quality of previous research? Why are these important in making this assessment?

4.     Should formulation of a research question precede or follow consultation with the scholarly literature? Please explain.

Assignment Expectations

·         You are expected to consult the scholarly literature in preparing your paper; you are also expected to incorporate relevant background readings.

·         Your paper should be written in your own words. This will enable me to assess your level of understanding.

·         In order to earn full credit, you must clearly show that you have read ALL required background materials.

·         Be sure to cite your references in the text of all papers and on the reference list at the end. For examples, look at the way the references are listed in the modules and on the background reading list.

·         Proofread your paper to be sure grammar and punctuation are correct and that each part of the assignment has been address clearly and completely.

The Assignment: Your task is to attend and observe a music event, and analyze it as part of a music-culture; then to share your experience in a short talk, as well as create a brief ethnography (written documentation) of the musical expression.

Objective:To better understand how musical expressions occur in a given time and place; and to have an experience of conducting et

hnographic fieldwork, a four-fold process that includes preparation, participant-observation in a community setting, analysis of data collected, and dissemination of findings.

Requirements:

 

1. Select a performance of live music this semester, at either an event sponsored by the university or off-campus. We will discuss your topic in class at some point. You may attend any type of event in which music is performed, including but not limited to: religious services on or off campus, cultural shows, sporting events, dances, weddings, karaoke, performances by the Music Department’s ensembles, street music, musicals, etc.

 

2. Decide soon what performance you will attend, including: the date and location, genre of music, names of performers (if known).

 

3. In addition, think of and write out (at least) five preliminary questions — pertaining to the performance, the music, and/or the community/culture — for which you hope to find answers in the course of attending the performance. You must include these questions into your paper, by working it into a paragraph of text. Also write about how you were able to find answers, or not.

 

4. Attend this performance of music. Be sure to arrive early and stay until the end of the performance. NOTE: You must attend a live show after reading this assignment (that is, you cannot watch a video, and you cannot write about something you’ve already seen).

 

5. Observe various aspects of the performance, try to answer your Preliminary Questions, and include summaries of both of the following areas in your report:

Genre, Musicians, Music, Ensemble

• What is the genre of music?

• What are the names of the composers of the music? When did they live?

• Who are the musicians, and what is their group’s name?

• What instruments are being played? In what textures?

• Are there solos? Solos with ensembles? Only ensemble playing?

• How long are the pieces of music? How many pieces?

• Is there much repetition?

• Do the musicians improvise or play composed music, or both?

• What rhythms can you count? What are the tempos? Is there variety?

 

Context, Audience, Interaction, Behavior

• What is the physical space where the music happens? Describe it.

• What is the setting and context of the performance?

• Is there anything unusual about the performance?

• How does the audience behave? Are they all doing similar things?

• Describe the behavior of musicians and audience – imagine your reader has never been to any concerts and has no way of knowing how people act.

• What do some of the musicians and/or audience members and/or event staff have to say to you? Interview them if possible.

• How do musicians and audience interact?

• What is the purpose and meaning of the performance?

• Is a community formed because of the show? Is it re-affirmed by the show?

 

6. Report: Type a 2 to 3 page Report on the event, attempting to answer some the above questions as well as your own.

Describe the concert for someone who has never heard this type of music; that is, assume that your reader has no knowledge of the performance genre or community.

Important note on sources: You must use correct citations for quoted materials, interviews, recordings, books, articles, websites, and all sources consulted. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense.

Social psychology is the study of how a person or a group’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are influenced by surrounding factors (social stimuli). One of the first major theorists to examine how external factors influence people was Kurt Lewin. Lewin is best known for his creation of field theory. Field theory is based on the concept that an individual must be understood within his or her “field” or external life space, including all of the person’s needs, goals, or external circumstances that might influence behavior. Of particular importance are Lewin’s descriptions of conflict situations. He described three common conflict situations, as follows (Lewin, 1951):

·         Approach-approach conflict: Occurs when a person needs to choose between two equally attractive and positive goals

·         Avoidance-avoidance conflict: Occurs when a person needs to choose between two negative options that are both equally unsatisfying

·         Approach-avoidance conflict: Occurs when a person is both attracted to and resistant of the same situation

It is possible to see the three main conflict situations frequently within one’s own life and those of others. One can also see how competing forces within a person’s field can lead to indecision or internal conflict.

·         Describe a situation from your own life in which you felt uncertain about a decision that you needed to make. Please make sure to use an example that you feel comfortable disclosing with your instructor and classmates.

o    Which type of conflict situation (approach-approach, avoidance-avoidance, or approach-avoidance) best fits your example, and why?

o    Describe some of the influencing factors within your field or life space at that time.

English 300 Definition Essay

Definition Essay is Due ________________.  It is to meet the following criteria:

1.      2-3pages in length; not including the Works Cited page

2.      Follow your formatting style and provide both in-text citing and a bibliography page.

3.      A clear thesis statement is required.

4.      Use a minimum of three outside sources for support and since you are defining a concept in your field of study and will be doing an annotated bibliography, keep that is mind for possibly using these three sources as part of that assignment.

5.      NEVER use Wikipedia – self policed websites cannot be counted on for truthful and credible information.

6.      A clean, printed, hard copy is to be turned in to the professor in class.

7.      The essays are due on the assigned day (on the syllabus) and will be docked one letter grade per day that they are late.  That means EVERY day, not just class days.

 

Purpose: The purpose for definition writing is to provide a more detailed and extended definition than is generally found in a dictionary or simple definition.  If you take an informative approach the tone should be detached and objective. If the tone takes a persuasive slant, the tone might be more urgent. A third possibility for definition is satiric, where a funny approach works well.   

When taking the purpose into account, it is imperative that the purpose be kept in mind so that the essay stays focused on the stated thesis.

 

Audience: If the essay is meant to inform for general readers, helpful sources should include examples, characteristics and origins.  If the essay is meant to persuade then the focus may shift toward a more emotional tone that ignites the reader’s feelings and wish for change.  If the approach is satiric the focus can show a more humorous definition but be sure to choose a topic that is appropriate for humor.  As always, the audience for college essays should be inclusionary and be for all to read and written at an adult level.

·         When developing the information to be added to a definition essay remember to:

·         1^st – choose a term that fulfills the definition requirement and is a topic that is broad enough to define (i.e. cult, friend, loyalty, academic honesty, effective parenting)

·         2^nd – Classify the term (i.e. Academic dishonesty – cheating)

·         3^rd – Characteristics (i.e. cheating on a test, looking up answers on a phone, plagiarism, copying another person’s homework, etc.)

·         Develop the extended definition by asking questions:

§  How does X look, taste, smell, feel and sound? (Narration)

§  What are some typical instances of X? (Exemplification)

§  How does X work? (Process Analysis)

§  What leads to X? What are X’s consequences? (Cause-Effect)

§  What does X do? (Narration)

·         What are X’s component parts? What different forms can X take? (Division-Classification)

·         What is X like or unlike? (Comparison-Contrast)

Organization and Development: Generally definition essays need to sharpen the focus of the reader by grabbing his or her attention by creating a very strong introduction that provides a brief, formal definition of the term that the extended definition will explore. Definition by negation is often helpful in that the essay can explore what a term is NOT. Another possibility for development is to create a stipulative definition that defines something in small terms. (Ex. Defined narrowly, a good student is one who gets good grades.) The introduction might also end with a plan of development. (Ex.  Academic dishonesty begins with doing something easily justified in a students’ mind, becomes an easy out, and ends with cheating becoming the normal mode of behavior.)
