What Makes a Good Reader of Literature?

In his collected Lectures on Literaturethe American writer Vladimir Nabokov (author of the controversial novel Lolita), we find a “little quiz” he devised for his students to test their thinking about what makes a “good reader.” Take his good reader quiz, below, and see if you can identify the four qualities Nabokov required from his students of literature.

Select four answers to the question what should a reader be to be a good reader:

1. The reader should belong to a book club.
2. The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.
3. The reader should concentrate on the social-economic angle.
4. The reader should prefer a story with action and dialogue to one with none.
5. The reader should have seen the book in a movie.
6. The reader should be a budding author.
7. The reader should have imagination.
8. The reader should have memory.
9. The reader should have a dictionary.
10. The reader should have some artistic sense.

Justify each answer by briefly explaining why you consider that to be an important quality. Add “because” to the end of that answer and complete the sentence. Then illustrate 2 of your answers by describing how those particular qualities helped you understand, experience, or connect with one of the short-stories from this unit.

Brass Tacks

  • Compose one substantive, well-written paragraph (200+ words) that incorporates textual evidence (words, phrases, etc.) that are properly cited (page numbers in parentheses at end of sentence, before the period).
  • Students who respond to their peers’ questions and observations should aim for 100-200 words and incorporate some form of textual evidence (either from other students’ posts or from the course texts).
  • See the DISCUSS grading rubric in the syllabus for guidance.
  • Remember to use present tense when discussing literary texts or arguments.

Description of Movie

On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is released from Victor Verster Prison after having spent 27 years in jail. Four years later, Mandela is elected the first black President of South Africa. His presidency faces enormous challenges in the postApartheid era, including rampant poverty and crime, and Mandela is particularly concerned about racial divisions between black and white South Africans, which could lead to violence. The ill will which both groups hold towards each other is seen even in his own security detail where relations between the established white officers, who had guarded Mandela’s predecessors, and the black ANC additions to the security detail, are frosty and marked by mutual distrust. While attending a game between the Springboks, the country’s rugby union team, and England, Mandela recognizes that the blacks in the stadium are cheering for England, as the mostly-white Springboks represent prejudice and apartheid in their minds; he remarks that he did the same while imprisoned on Robben Island. Knowing that South Africa is set to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup in one year’s time, Mandela persuades a meeting of the newly black-dominated South African Sports Committee to support the Springboks. He then meets with the captain of the Springboks rugby team, François Pienaar (Matt Damon), and implies that a Springboks victory in the World Cup will unite and inspire the nation. Mandela also shares with François a British poem, “Invictus”, that had inspired him during his time in prison. François and his teammates train. Many South Africans, both black and white, doubt that rugby will unite a nation torn apart by nearly 50 years of racial tensions, as for many blacks, especially the radicals, the Springboks symbolise white supremacy. Both Mandela and Pienaar, however, stand firmly behind their theory that the game can successfully unite the South African country. Things begin to change as the players interact with the fans and begin a friendship with them. During the opening games, support for the Springboks begins to grow among the black population. By the second game, the whole country comes together to support the Springboks and Mandela’s efforts. Mandela’s security team also grows closer as the various officers come to respect their comrades’ professionalism and dedication. The Springboks surpass all expectations and qualify for the final against The All Blacks—South Africa’s arch-rivals. New Zealand and South Africa were universally regarded as “The day I’m unwilling to risk my political capital and public opinion, is the day I’m no longer qualified to lead.” the two greatest rugby nations, with the Springboks being the only side to have a winning record against the All Blacks up to this point. The first test series between the two countries in 1921 was the beginning of an intense rivalry, with emotions running high whenever the two nations met on the rugby field. Before the game, the Springbok team visits Robben Island, where Mandela spent the first 18 of his 27 years in jail. There Pienaar is inspired by Mandela’s will and his idea of self-mastery in “Invictus”. François mentions his amazement that Mandela “could spend thirty years in a tiny cell, and come out ready to forgive the people who put [him] there”. Supported by a large home crowd of all races, Pienaar motivates his team. Mandela’s security detail receives a scare when, just before the match, a South African Airways Boeing 747 jetliner flies in low over the stadium. It is not an assassination attempt though, but a demonstration of patriotism, with the message “Good Luck, Bokke” — the Springboks’ Afrikaans nickname — painted on the undersides of the plane’s wings. The Springboks win the match on an added time long drop-kick from fly-half Joel Stransky, with a score of 15–12. Mandela and Pienaar meet on the field together to celebrate the improbable and unexpected victory. Mandela’s car then drives away in the traffic-jammed streets leaving the stadium. As Mandela watches the South Africans celebrating together from the car, his voice is heard reciting.

Some Points to be Address in Paper

1. Watch carefully leadership traits on display in scenes from Invictus.

2. Identify and describe leadership traits demonstrated by the two main characters.

3. According to President Mandela, as portrayed by Morgan Freeman in this film, what is the essence of leadership? 4. What are some traits we see in President Mandela’s character that shows he’s a good leader? What are some leadership traits we see in Francois?

5. What does the poem “Invictus” mean to Mandela? What might we expect “Invictius” to mean for South Africa as a nation? Why is it important as a leader to unify its followers even when times get rough?

6. Explain why a team’s performance can affect the larger institution, be it a school or a nation and how this performance can transcend into a form of leadership (Can sports teams, clubs, and the like in your school have a similar impact on overall student life?).

7. Invictus looks like a good movie, but so what? What can we take-away from this movie to help us become better leaders?

Question

2 discussion questions to post for MBA level Human Resource Management Online

The responses should include answering the main discussion questions, fully, including proper cites as well.  If you use citaitons I should be able to look it up to use for reference to understand.  The professor requires that the questions be restated and then answered for the discussion questions.  If this is not done, it is his option to deduct formatting points and I could get a “0” for the work.  This discussion does not require APA style.  The 2 discussion questions should be lest than 2 pages long.  As long as you fully answer the discussion questiong we will be good.  I have to copy and post to the discussion board.  All work should be original with not plagiarism and proper English grammar.

Discussion Question 1:  “Managing Change in Organizations”

Determine why change is so difficult for organizations. Propose ways that human resource (HR) specialists can assist in making change easier.

Propose two ways that HR can prepare its employees for the changes involved with moving from a domestic assignment to an overseas assignment. Respond and evaluate another learner’s comment. Ground students will do this through discussion.

When we discuss change in organizations we must think of change in four quadrants:  technology, structure, personnel and task.  Under systems theory if a change is made in one quadrant it impacts on the other quadrants.  How can understanding this concept help a HR achieve better change management results in an organization?

Discussion Question 2:  “Future of Human Resource Management”

Use the Internet or Library to research three trends in HR. Next, examine the three trends in HR that you researched. Provide probable causes for these trends. Provide probable causes for these trends. Predict how these trends will affect organizations in a single sector of your choosing.

Examine the duties and responsibilities of a HR specialist. Determine the contributions that someone in this position makes to an organization. Support your position.

When we look at trends in HR it is difficult to predict trends with a degree of specificity because each component of HR will have different trends.  When you look at answering this question, consider which area of HR you are looking at.  The three primary roles of HR are: 1.  total rewards (compensation and benefits)  2.  performance management3.  talent management Pick one of these three (3) areas that interest you and see if you can identify trends that are specific to those areas.
