Advanced Aviation Economics – Written assignment

Airlines offer a variety of products ranging from the no-frills air transportation to international first class featuring amenity-filled cubicles with fully reclining seat/beds and attentive in-flight service. This assignment is intended to illustrate the variety of airline product offerings available and stimulate thinking about how best to serve the diverse wants and needs of passengers.

Europe’s Ryanair is well known for its cheap fares and bare-bones service. Europe’s old line network carriers including British Airways, Air France/KLM and Lufthansa, on the other hand, offer more choices and features within Europe and to major destinations worldwide. In Asia, low-cost-airlines are rapidly expanding in the marketplace. Air Asia and Jetstar are two of the larger LCCs (along with their various subsidiaries). Asia also is home to many full-service airlines such as Japan Airlines, Air China, Cathay Pacific, Singapore, and Korean Air.

In a short research paper, compare and contrast a chosen LCC with a full-service airline using Doganis’ 5 key product features as a framework (price, schedule, comfort, convenience, and image). Choose one or two city-pairs served by both carriers on which to base the comparison. Summarize your findings and emphasize critical differences. Extensive data, such as the ancillary fee structure, may be best presented in a table. Discuss the passenger segment(s) targeted by each airline. Next, compare the airlines’ profit history using a common metric such as margin on total revenue. Conclude with an evaluation of each carrier’s overarching business strategy. Explain your assessment of the most profitable strategy.

Upon reading the paper, a potential passenger should have the information needed to choose between the two airlines on the selected city-pair(s). Note:  Before beginning your research, ensure that the needed data are available from the airlines’ websites and other online sources.

Use APA style including a title page, table(s) or charts as appropriate, citations, reference list, running head, page numbers, and section headings. Of course, an introduction and conclusion are always appropriate. There is no page number requirement, but about six pages, not including title page, reference list, and appendices, should be sufficient.

ENG121

Read the two essays attached to this assignment: Cofer’s “A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood” and Angelou’s “Sister Flowers.”  In a post of approximately 300 words, identify what each piece’s thesis is using the skills that we discussed in Week 1. Please note that we are not identifying the TOPIC; that was identified for you in the introduction to this week and we aren’t discussing what happens in the essay or what it’s about.  Rather, you should identify the point that each essay is making about its topic.  In addition to boiling down the thesis of each piece, you should cite specific phrases or examples from each to demonstrate how each author uses powerful descriptive language or imagery to flesh out the thesis.  Remember to also avoid using personal anecdote or opinion to support your claims; stick to the text to analyze what makes it “work.”  Also keep in mind what you read in Chapter 4 of the Argument Today text concerning effective reading strategies.  Post your observations by Wednesday at 11:59 PM.

Then, respond to two peers by Sunday night at 11:59 PM.  In your responses, you should not only say, “Hey, I agree!” or “I’m not sure that I agree.”  Use specific examples from the text to either support your classmate’s observations or offer counter-examples that might disprove/refine your classmate’s thoughts.

Assignment 3: Database Models: Does One Size Fit All?

Assignment 3: Database Models: Does One Size Fit All?

In this assignment, you will conduct some initial research into the different types of database models and choose two in which to delve deeper. After your research, you would have gained a good understanding of the various database models and for what purpose each is best suited.

Tasks:

Different database models are used for a variety of reasons. Using the Argosy University online library resources, scholarly or professional resources, your course textbook, and the Internet, research and familiarize yourself with the hierarchical database model and the relational database model.

Based on your research, create a 3- to 5-page paper in a Microsoft Word document, which includes:

·         Similarities and differences between the two database models

·         Real-world examples of each type of database model

·         Recommendations for a database model for each of the following applications:

o    A human resources system that will track employee information such as home address, department, position, and salary

o    A criminal identification system that will collect suspect information such as name, height, weight, and gender at one location and then transmit the information to a central repository

o    A manufacturing system that will track inventories of raw materials and finished goods

Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources (i.e., APA); and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Submission Details:

Eight Steps to Writing a Literary Analysis Essay

1.Carefully read and annotate the literary texts:

To begin an essay, you first should become familiar with the literature you will write about.  Read the story/poem several times.  Write notes in the margin of the text or use sticky notes to jot down your thoughts and impressions of what you read.  Some potential things to notice include:

•What role does setting have in this story?

oHow does the author create this setting?

If figurative language is used, what is significant about the author’s techniques?

•What interests you about the story?

•What do you find disturbing about it?

•What did it teach you?

•Are elements of the story similar to others you’ve read?  Do any of these elements serve as symbols and/or allegories?  If so, how do these symbols and/or allegories connect to the theme of the story?

•What is the pace of the story like?

oHow does the author create this pace?

oHow does this pace connect with the storyline and theme?

•What is the main character like?

oHow do you know this?  What about his/her clothing, speech, etc. affects your perception of this character?

Annotations help you to read the text closely and prompt you to think about it in various ways.

2.Brainstorm potential topics and select one that interests you (be sure to include the three

literary techniques required in the assignment in your brainstorm activity)

In the class, you have been supplied with a general topic based on conflict.  However, it’s up to you as the writer to devise how you will narrow a topic and find a specific subject to write about.  It’s best to write on a conflict that interests you.  What conflict in what story/poem/play do you find most compelling?  Once you decide on a conflict, you can then begin brainstorming about it.  Many brainstorming techniques and templates exist; several can be found on this page: http://www.eslflow.com/brainstorming.html.

In selecting a topic, make sure you devise one that you can easily defend using examples and evidence from the literature.

3.Write a working thesis

On a blank piece of paper, jot down a “working thesis” that will help you focus on the main idea of your essay.  A working thesis does not mean that this is the final thesis for your paper; rather, it will help you direct your thoughts and assist you in sketching out an outline (and eventually your draft).

Tips onWriting a Thesis:

•It should be specific, concrete and detailed.

•It should focus on a specific conflict and explain why that conflict is important to readers.

•It should convey the essay’s central point.

•It should include the title of the text that you are writing about.

•It should be arguable.

•It should NOT have any use of the first person (“I” statements).

•It should be one sentence long. (For very long papers, a thesis can be longer; however, for the paper you are writing for this class, one sentence is sufficient).

One place to get started is the “Thesis Generator” found in the Ashford Writing Center: https://awc.ashford.edu/writing-tools-thesis-generator.html.

Some examples of a “working thesis” include:

•Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein expresses a conflict between humans and science; the novel shows how humans do not understand nor take responsibilities of the scientific creations they unleash on the world.

•The novel Gone With the Wind tells of the Civil War and how that conflict not only destroyed people, but allowed some people to prosper, creating a “nouveau riche” class that no longer depend on land to define their status or create their wealth.

•The spy thriller, James Bond, shows that the Cold War conflict centers on how to prevent the villain, who wants to dominate the globe, from using a deadly technological weapon that can annihilate millions of people.

•Okonkwo’s inner conflict and ultimate demise in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is analogous to the conflict and downfall in the tribe, thus revealing the tribe would have “fallen apart” regardless of the missionaries’ arrival.

•Sir Gawain’s struggle with the Green Knight in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is symbolic of the struggle all humans have when confronting their own mortality.

Note:  Notice how each working thesis example contains the word “conflict.”  This word helps to focus your writing on a specific kind of conflict.  This is a suggestion, but is not required.

4.Research and collect evidence (this includes collecting evidence on the three literary

theories that you need to discuss in the essay)

Now that you have a working thesis, do a bit of research and create a list of evidence to support it.  Your research may lead you to change your thesis, which is fine since a working thesis is meant to be revised and changed.  Evidence should come from both the primary texts (which is the literary works themselves) and secondary resources.

5.Select the best evidence and Interpret It.

With a list of evidence on hand, select the evidence that can best represent your thesis.  When you select the evidence, take time to interpret it and write down that interpretation.  Whenever you use a quote, it’s best to follow it with an interpretation in your own words.   What do the quotes you’ve taken from the text mean?  Write that meaning as you understand it.

6.Write an outline

You can find many outline templates online, including a Word template         embedded in your Word program.  There is also an outline guide at the Ashford Writing Center:  https://awc.ashford.edu/writing-tools-outline.html

7.Write from the outline

Think of your outline as a “to-do” list for your essay; you will need to flesh out all the ideas on it.  You don’t need to start at the introduction.  Start with a body paragraph – write a topic sentence that connect with your thesis, find supporting evidence for it, and comment on that supporting evidence.  Do this for each body paragraph

You can write your introduction and conclusion last.  Remember the thesis should be in your introduction, and the introduction “points to” what you will argue.  The conclusion should recapitulate the thesis and “point back” at the argument you just made.

8.Revise and Develop

This is the step where you make sure that ideas are fully developed, that the order of ideas makes sense, and that paragraphs are connected with transitional language.  You might look for sentences that are awkward and/or redundant wording. READING YOUR PAPER OUT LOUD is a fantastic tool to use at this stage.  For additional help at this stage, visit the Writing Reviser in the Ashford Writing Center at https://awc.ashford.edu/writing-tools-writing-reviser.html.  You can also visit http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/teaching/rst/pop5e.cfm.

      9.     Proofread and Edit.

This is the stage where you look for small errors, run spell check, changewording,

etc. Make sure all your evidence, quotes and sources are citedproperly in APA!

Checklist:

A.___________ Have you carefully read and re-read your text and annotated it?

B.___________ Have you fully brainstormed your topic and arrived at a single, specific, focused topic?

C.___________ Have you written a working thesis that will help you explore and develop your topic?

D.____________ Have you done your research and collected evidence?

E.____________ Have you selected your best evidence to use in the paper and write your interpretations of quotes?

F.____________ Have you written an outline?

G.____________ Did you write your draft from your outline?

H.____________ Have you revised your rough draft?  Have you re-organized your draft and added transitional phrases between paragraphs?   Have you revised your working thesis into a final thesis?

I.____________ Have you thoroughly proofread and edited your paper?  Are all your in-text citations in place and correct?  Is your reference page formatted in APA?

Best wishes for a successful literary analysis!

Case 9.1: Unprofessional Conduct?

Case 9.1: Unprofessional Conduct?

Transcript of Case 9.1 Unprofessional Conduct

Case 9.1 Unprofessional Conduct
Facts of the Case
Mrs. Pettit was a Special Education teacher at elementary school for over 13 years
She was a dedicated teacher and she always recieved positive reviews from the school’s principal
Mrs. Pettit was also a swinger; she and her husband believed in nonconventional sexual lifesyles
Because of their beliefs, they were asked to discuss their lifestyle on 2 local television shows
they wore disguises but were recognized by one of Mrs. Pettit’s co-workers
He talked to other colleagues about what he heard
A year later Mrs. Pettit and her husband joined ” The Swingers” a private club that promotes diverse sexual activities amoung its members
Facts Continued
At one of those parties Sergant Berk, an undercover police officer, observed Mrs, Pettit preforming oral sex on 3 different men in a 1 hour period
She was arrested and charged with oral copulation, which at the time broke the California Penal Code
She took a plea bargain, pleading guilty to the misdemeanor of outraging public decency and paid a fine
the school renewed her teaching contract for the next year, but 2 years later, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against her
the state board of education found no reason to complain, but the board revoked her license
Ethical Issues Involved
Does a teachers personal sex life affect thier ability to teach students?

Deos being a member of a swingers club make someone a less moral person?

Would you be comfortable with your child being taught by a swinger?
Ethical Thories
Libertarianism:
The actions of Mrs. Pettit were consensual and took place amoung willing adults. if people choose to live the swinger lifestyle and want to have parties to exchange partners that is thier business and if someone does not like what is going on they can choose not to attend swinger parties.

Rule-based ethics:
during the late 1960’s it was against the law to behave in the manor that Mrs. pettit did, so she should be punished for her behavior.
the Board said Mrs. Pettit demonstrated that she was unfit to teach because she engaged in immoral and unprofessional conduct at the party
Mrs. Pettit took her case to the California Supreme Court where they agreed with the board
3 school administrators had testified that in their opinion, her conduct proved she was unfit to teach
these experts worried she would interject her views of sexual morality into the classroom, and did not think she could act as a moral example to students

Facts Continued
Possible Solutions
the law changed to allow this behavior as long as all parties invoved are 18 and over
Teachers should not be punished for off the clock behavior as long as it does not interfer with their ability to get thier job done
Teachers should have the right to have any type of personal life they choose as long as they do not force their beliefs on others

Located on page 342 of your textbook

  1. Do you believe the Board of Education violated her right to privacy? Were they justified in firing her? Explain two to three (2-3) major reasons why or why not.
  2. Was Pettit’s behavior unprofessional or immoral? Do you believe she was unfit to teach? Provide a rationale for your position.
  3. If teachers have good performance inside the classroom, should they also be held to a higher moral standard outside the classroom? Explain why or why not.
  4. Analyze five (5) behaviors you believe would show unprofessional or immoral conduct for a teacher.

Question

(Week 7) Two set of discussions questions to post for MBA level Business Employment Law Online!

Please Read Instructions First:  This assignment “DOES NOT” require APA style.  No headers or cover page is needed.  I must post on online for class.  I attached an “example format for discussion questions” and “chapter for review” so you can see how the discussions questions should be formatted and answered.  All work should be original with no plagiarism and in proper English grammar.  The responses should include answering the main discussion questions, fully, including proper cites as well.  When you use citations and resources, I should be able to look it up to find where you got it from and to ensure they are accurate.  (USE ALL BOOK, JOURNALS, MAGAZINE ARTICLES, PUBLICATIONS, CITATIONS AND RESOURCES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT FROM THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA!)  I highlighted the questions in “red, bold, italic and underlined” so you know which ones to answer.  Each discussion question should cover the question completely and be a paragraph or more in length.  The more in-depth the information is, the better.

Discussion Questions 1

“Pay Equity and Benefits”  Please respond to the following:

Use the Internet to research the Equal Pay Act and its effects on both men and women in the workplace. https://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/publications/fs-epa.cfm

Using the information from the Equal Pay Act, determine the importance of equal pay between men and women. Then, suggest two (2) valid reasons why their pay may be different for the same position. Justify your response.

Discussion Questions 2

“Pay Equity and Benefits”  Please respond to the following:

Assess the importance of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) when an employer provides benefits of any kind. I attached the chapter so you can refer to cases from my textbook.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Building the Human Resources Database

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Building the Human Resources Database

Description of LASA:

For this assignment, you will build the database that you designed in M3 Assignment 2 LASA 1 and populate it with employee information. Then, you will execute Structured Query Language (SQL) statements against the database in order to insert, update, modify, and display the information contained in the database.

Scenario:

The president of Altair Software has reviewed and approved the database design that you completed in M3 Assignment 2 LASA 1. You will now build, configure, and populate the database. Additionally, since Altair Software is a fast-growing company, there have been several changes in salary and personnel since you designed the database. You will need to write SQL statements to insert, update, and remove records in the database, as well as a statement to display the records and run them against the database to see the results. The changes are as follows:

1.     Both vice presidents easily surpassed their goals and objectives for the prior year and are being given salary raises. The new salary for the vice president position is $80,000.

2.     To attract talented programmers directly out of college, Altair Software has decided to raise the base salary for both Programmer I and Programmer II by $5,000 to $40,000 and $50,000, respectively.

3.     Programmer Arlene Smith was recruited by a competitor but in order to keep her with Altair Software, the company promoted her to the newly created position of Programmer III, with a salary of $60,000.

Question

(Week 9) Two set of discussions questions to post for MBA level Human Resource Management Online!

Please Read Instructions First:   This assignment for discussions questions “does not” require APA style.  I have to post to discussion board for an online class.  I attached an “example format for discussion questions” so you can see how the discussions questions should be formatted and answered.  All work should be original with no plagiarism and in proper English grammar.  The responses should include answering the main discussion questions, fully, including proper cites as well.  If you use citations, I should be able to look it up online to find where you got it from.  (USE ALL AMERICAN PUBLICATIONS, CITATIONS AND RESOURCES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT!)  The professor requires that the questions be restated and then answered for the discussion questionsI highlighted the questions in “red, bold, italic and underlined” so you would know exactly which ones to restate and answer.  If this is not done, it is his option to deduct formatting points and I could get a “0” for the work.  The more in-depth the information is, the better, as long as you fully answer each set of discussions questions.  Discussion Questions Set 1 can be two pages or less including restating the questions with citations.  Discussion Questions Set 2 can be two pages or less including restating the questions with citations.

Discussion Questions Set 1 “Compensation and Government Regulations” Please respond to the following:

·         Compare job-based pay with skill-based pay and provide an example of each.  Determine which pay you would prefer. Support your decision.

·         Determine how government regulations affect compensation and if the regulations are needed. Support your position with examples.

·         Class, there are numerous regulations and laws that impact on compensation and benefits.  Such federal laws include FLSA, ERSIA, EPA, Title VII, ADEA and many others.  These laws do not include the laws that may be passed by State, or local, governments that impact on compensation.  Nor does the list of Federal laws, State or local laws, include the agreements that may be reached through collective bargaining or employment contracts.  Let’s begin with some basic insights to these different regulatory and laws:

a.  Can State, or local law, pass compensation laws that differ from Federal Law, e.g. the FLSA?

b.  Which has precedent, a collective bargaining agreement versus Federal, State or local laws/regulations?

c.  Can a collective bargaining agreement ever agree to pay less than the minimum wage?

d.  What is the difference between regular hours and overtime hours as defined by the FLSA?

Discussion Questions Set 2 “Compensation Packages” Please respond to the following:

·         Examine the common elements of compensation packages. Determine which two elements you believe to be the most motivational to an employee and to you. Support your position.

·         Compare team and individual bonuses and incentives. Determine which type of bonuses and incentives you would prefer. Support your position with examples.

·         Class, when we discuss compensation we must begin with the basic question is the compensation design equitable?  By that I mean does the elements of the compensation design (and elements) meet internal and external equity?  Further, does the compensation design/elements meet the needs of the employees, and motivate them?  Let’s address the equity question.  While equity may mean many things to many people what we in HR are concerned about is how the compensation plan compares to be employees in similar situated positions versus comparing employees in similar situated positions external to the firm.  This is not only referring to base salary, but encompasses such factors as severance, bonuses, retirement plans, benefits and career development.  So, my first question is this, how do you determine and manage internal/external equity? Some, if not all, of us in the class has taken Organizational Behavior, or a similar class.  At some point the class probably discussed theories of motivation, such as Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, Mayo, or Vroom.  Why is the understanding and application of motivational theory important to HR in designing a compensation system?
