Assignment 2: LASA 1: Case Studies Presentation

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Case Studies Presentation

By Wednesday, May 25, 2016, create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to educate a group of medical students participating in their grand rounds. There should be at least ten slides in your Microsoft PowerPoint as well as a title slide and a slide listing all your sources for creating this slideshow. You should also create speaker notes for each slide of your presentation, which include the main talking points for the topic addressed on the slide. Save the presentation as AU_PSY350_M3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.ppt. Submit your assignment to theM3 Assignment 2 LASA 1 Dropbox.

In order to create your slideshow, review the two case studies and then answer the questions following each case study:

Case Study 1: Isaac is a fifty-nine-year-old man. Several months ago, he noticed a slight tremor in his hands. He assumed this to be a normal consequence of aging. The tremor, however, gradually worsened, along with some muscular stiffness and slowness in initiating movement. The tremor was more pronounced when he was not voluntarily moving. Isaac was referred to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. After visiting the neurologist, Isaac and his family ask you to further explain this disorder. Isaac also asks about L-dopa as a treatment—the neurologist had mentioned L-dopa as an effective medication but had instead prescribed selegiline:

·         What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?

·         What are the possible causes? Be sure to discuss both hereditary and environmental factors thought to contribute to this disease.

·         What parts of the brain does this disease affect?

·         Why do you think the neurologist prescribed selegiline instead of L-dopa?

Case Study 2: Sabrina is a twenty-seven-year-old woman who recently underwent a corpus callosotomy. Initially after surgery, when given a verbal command, Sabrina demonstrated marked apraxia of the left hand. However, the extent of this issue diminished over time. Answer the following questions about this client:

·         What disorder was most likely being treated by this operation, and how is the surgery performed?

·         In what way is the surgery expected to help Sabrina?

·         What are the risks and benefits of the surgery? Compare these to the risks and benefits of an alternative treatment. If the decision were yours, which would you recommend? Explain your decision.

·         What was the cause of the apraxia?

·         What does the reduction in apraxia symptoms tell us about hemispheric specialization?

Click here to follow tips on creating a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. For this assignment and all Dropbox assignments, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome. Scholarly sources are preferred and can be found in the Argosy University online library. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Do not use Wikipedia.

Compare and Contrast

Compare and Contrast Instructions

The table below provides an extensive list of topic options from which you must select, and we recommend that you choose one that you are interested in beyond this course. For instance, if you are a Finance or Business major, you might be interested in the Stocks v. Bonds topic. If you are a Political Science major, you might choose Monarchy v. Presidency. Or perhaps you’re taking StraighterLine’s Intro to Philosophy course, in which case you might opt for the Hobbes v. Locke topic. Note that you must use at least one credible source to support your ideas.

Additional helpful resources:

Compare/Contrast Rubric | Compare and Contrast Sample

You may choose any of these topics:
Topic Options

•Stocks v. Bonds

•Socialism v. Capitalism

•Hitler v. Napoleon

•Apple v. Microsoft

•Renaissance Art v. Baroque Art (or any two artistic periods)

•Biology v. Chemistry

•America in the 1950s v. the 1970s

•Women in 1914 v. today

•Pop Culture in the 1980s v. Pop Culture today

•Abraham Lincoln v. Thomas Jefferson (or any two presidencies)

•British English v. American English

•Writing for print v. Writing for the Web•American Government v. Canadian Government (or any world government)

•US Constitution v. Articles of Confederation

•Star Wars v. Star Trek

•Monarchy v. Presidency

•Thomas Hobbes v. John Locke (or any two philosophers)

•The former USSR v. Russia today

•(World War) Allies v. Axis

•Maya Angelou v. Adrienne Rich (or any two poets)

•Nazism v. Fascism

Choose one of the options above and write an essay comparing or contrasting the two topics in your selection using EITHER the point-by-point OR the subject-by-subject method to organize the details and specific examples. Consider focusing on three to five subtopics and generate ideas through prewriting. Develop a strong thesis statement for your essay that includes your two topics from the list above; your three to five subtopics; and a claim about how they are similar, different, or both.

Sample Thesis Statements:

If you will argue that your two topics are mostly similar:

Topic A and Topic B share many similar characteristics, including (Supporting point 1), (Supporting point 2), and (Supporting point 3); while they differ in (Additional supporting point), the similarities greatly outweigh the differences.

OR

If you will argue that your two topics are mostly different:

While Topic A and Topic B have (Additional supporting point) in common, they are mostly quite different; in fact, they differ in characteristics such as (Supporting point 1), (Supporting point 2), and (Supporting point 3).

OR

If you will argue that your two topics have many important/interesting similarities and differences:

Analyzing Topic A and Topic B reveals many fascinating similarities as well as differences; for instance, they share (Supporting point 1) and (Supporting point 1), but are vastly different when it comes to (Supporting point 3) and (Supporting point 4).

Tips

To brainstorm, you might consider using a Venn diagram or a simple list to show what your topics have in common and how they differ. Then you can select the most prominent or interesting characteristics that you want to highlight in your paper.

Be sure to avoid beginning your comparisons or contrasts in the introduction. Your thesis is the only place in the introduction where you will include this information. Use the introduction to get your reader’s attention, and consider using a good strategy that leads into the topic. For instance, you might relate a short anecdote to illustrate your topic, an interesting quotation that relates to your topic, or perhaps a surprising statistic that reveals something about your topic.

Then, in the body paragraphs remember to support your claim(s) outlined in the thesis. For instance, if one of your points says the city and the country are different in terms of transportation, be sure the topic sentence of one body paragraph presents a similar statement. In addition, spend equal time on each subtopic in each body paragraph, and one way to develop organized body paragraphs is to focus on one topic before moving to the next one so that the paragraph support is split 50/50. In other words, using the example above, you would explain the transportation options in the city in full, and then, you would detail the types of contrasting transportation in the country. End each body paragraph with a strong concluding sentence that synthesizes that paragraph’s discussions.

The conclusion should sum up the specific supporting points as well as your overall assessment of why these points are important. Consider what kinds of interesting or new conclusions you can draw from your comparison. In other words, your essay must reveal why your comparison is important. A well-developed paragraph often contains a minimum of five sentences. Note that any of the main sections below labeled with Roman Numerals (I, II, III, IV) could be more than just a single paragraph.

Point-by-Point

I. Introduction
    A. Thesis
    B. Additional information to introduce your topic and gain the reader’s attention

II. Supporting point 1
    A. Topic 1
    B. Topic 2

III. Supporting point 2

IV. Supporting point 3
    A. Topic 1
    B. Topic 2

V. Supporting point 4 or Additional point
    A. Topic 1
    B. Topic 2

VI. Conclusion
    A. Reiterate your thesis (but do not simply restate it from the introduction)
    B. Give your overall assessment—the “so what” factor—about your topic. For instance, is one topic better than the other for some reason? Is one topic misunderstood?

Subject-by-Subject

    B. Give your overall assessment—the “so what” factor—about your topic. For instance, is one topic better than the other for some reason? Is one topic misunderstood?

Here’s an example of how you might organize using these methods for an essay about cats versus dogs as pets (remember, this topic is not one of the options for this essay).

Point-by-Point

I. Introduction
    A. Thesis: While cats and dogs are both clear winners when it comes to pet choices, these animals are vastly different when it comes to noise level, exercise needs, and cleanliness.

Homan (2016) stresses for organization that people are your most valuable resource that any organization can have. The organization cannot do it all by themselves. When you bring people in, you have the potential to bring a variety of talents and assets to the table (p. 173). “Any change that amounts to anything involves other people, maybe even a lot of people” (p. 173). With talents and assets, they can bring new ideas as well. Most importantly, you are allowing outsiders in to be a part of something bigger. People are always looking to help and give back. Why not utilize this into something greater the organization already is.

With more hands involved there is additional help to help with any future fundraising events. Not only does the organization get include others into meaningful, sometimes lifechanging events, but we have a labor pool to fill the gap rather to hire temporary help. With a fundraising event, the organization can brand themselves, let others know the new direction, recruit potential funders, and possibly partner with other organizations that can supply us with future items, for the new mission, or more fundraising events. The need to meet new people and organizations are priority to furthering the new course. Maybe with money, maybe with items, and maybe with added services for the new population. Anything that is more than what we have is progress. With progress comes change.

Assignment 2: RA: Compare and Contrast Interviews to Noninterview Employee Selection Assessments

Assignment 2: RA: Compare and Contrast Interviews to Noninterview Employee Selection Assessments

Assignment 2: RA: Compare and Contrast Interviews to Noninterview Employee Selection Assessments

Background

As a selection strategy, interviews are intended to gauge future performance on the basis of oral responses, demeanor, body language, and so on. Interviews can be of different kinds, depending on the purpose. For example, interviews can be structured or situational. While interviews are a critical part of the selection process, and probably the most widely recognized, other assessment tests are also an important part of attempting to predict the future job performance and capabilities of candidates. Assessments can be considered a more objective measure than interviews and can be developed to precisely assess specific skills and competencies.

Directions

Write a 5- to 7-page paper that compares and contrasts interviews to noninterview employee selection assessments. In your paper, make sure you include a discussion of the following points:

Section 1: Noninterview Assessments

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of relying on testing as the sole method of selection.
  • Identify two assessment tests and briefly summarize their structure and design and provide an example of a typical item for this type of test. Make sure to explain how the test is designed to assess a candidate’s prospects for a particular position and an example of content.
  • Evaluate the two tests and discuss factors that contribute to the appropriate use of a particular test for a particular situation. Why might a test not be the most effective choice?

Section 2: Selection Interviews

  • Select a pair of interview types from the list of three pairs provided below. Research and describe those two types and explain when their use would be most appropriate.
  • Behavioral versus situational
  • Panel versus individual
  • Structured versus unstructured
  • Compare and contrast the two types, exploring their advantages and disadvantages, as well as their use. Provide 5 questions for each type of interview you choose.

Section 3: Interviews vs. Noninterview Assessments

  • Based on your research, compare and contrast interviews versus noninterviews in terms of efficacy in meeting organizational objectives.
  • Identify any areas of susceptibility to adverse impact in the assessment tests or interviews.
  • Analyze how the selection process can be enhanced by combining assessment tests with interviews.

Submission Details:

  • By Wednesday, October save your report into a Microsoft Word document in APA format and utilizing at least six scholarly sources.
  • Save the report as M3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.doc and submit it to the M3 Assignment 2 RA Dropbox. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

1.       For each of the US products or services in the table, insert appropriate market structure.

Product or service

Market Structure

Municipal water company

Passenger airlines

Automobiles

Patented pharmaceutical drug

Cell phone network providers

Over the road trucking

Express package delivery

Fast food

2.       In oligopoly, each firm is acutely aware of the production and marketing decisions of all competitors and carefully considers the potential competitive reactions in all decisions.  Discuss whether firms in other market structures consider the potential reaction of competitors when making important marketing decisions.

3.       Part of the debate among economists on US airline deregulation in the 1978 involved the theory of contestable markets.  List the four characteristics of contestable markets explained by Baye and Prince and evaluate how well the airline industry meets these criteria.

4.       Price outcomes of the 5 (there are 5, not 4) oligopoly models differ substantially.  Which models produces the lowest and highest total profits (all firms combined)?  Which market structure produce the same prices?

5.       Oligopoly is the predominant market structure in the airline industry.  In the express package business, FedEx, UPS, and DHL compete in the global air express industry.  In the US, FedEx and UPS are a duopoly.  FedEx and UPS financial indicators such as net margin on sales and return on assets are near the average for US companies (low or zero economic profits).  Which of the 5 oligopoly models best explains the FedEx-UPS duopoly?  List the assumptions of the model and explain how the integrated cargo carriers meet the assumptions.

6.       The mission statement for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries states, “the mission of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is to coordinate and unify the petroleum policies of its Member Countries and ensure the stabilization of oil markets in order to secure an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consumers, a steady income to producers and a fair return on capital for those investing in the petroleum industry.”  Even when the OPEC members agree on a total output (at times they do not agree), explain why the members often disagree on how much petroleum each country should produce.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Going Public: The Regulatory Environment

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Going Public: The Regulatory Environment

For this assignment, you will research regulatory requirements that affect a publically traded financial institution and make recommendations in the form of an executive summary report on how to proceed.

You have taken a job as an IT manager at a small financial institution that is looking to expand and become a publically traded company. In preparation, the chief operating officer (COO) has requested that you conduct an audit of the IT department, and you have determined that the IT department does not meet regulatory requirements as they pertain to information systems and security. The COO is now requesting that you determine which regulations must be met before the company can be publically traded.

Tasks:

·         Research and identify at least two regulatory requirements that the institution must consider before moving forward. The requirements should pertain to information systems and security within financial institutions or publically traded companies.

·         Explain why the organization should adhere to these policies even if they are not mandatory.

·         Explore the ethical aspects and consider the benefits of the requirements from the perspective of the institution’s customers (i.e., not merely from a legal standpoint).

·         In an executive summary report, describe the regulatory requirements and propose solutions for implementation.

·         In the proposed solutions for implementation, also address other relevant aspects of corporate governance, such as human resources and financial governance.

·         Assume the people reading your report have no technical background. Be careful not to overuse technical jargon or acronyms; however, also make sure the report is not written in a condescending tone.

Submission Details:

·         By Monday, May 23, 2016, prepare a 6- to 8-page report. Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources (i.e., use APA format); and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

·         Save your report in a Microsoft Word document with the name M5_A1_LastName_FirstInitial.doc and upload it to the M5 Assignment 1 LASA 2 Dropbox.

Dear Mohammed,

A good idea for a fundraiser regarding the Somali people could be to make a soccer tournament since is the most popular game in the country. To attract the Somali community, only Somali people will be allowed to play, although other nationalities can come to the activities and watch the games. The point to only be Somali people allowed to play is to unite more the Somali community and to help strengthen their relation with those from other communities.

As part of the fundraise, teams should register for an amount of money, should be sponsor by a Somali business or establishment, and kiosk spots should be rented for selling food and drinks plus Somali apparel such as headgear, and accessories. The collected money will go to the funds for the community group, and also Somali contributors will benefit from the community since they will be participating in supporting the community group.

The best approach is by spreading the word around the community, schools, community stores, radio, and Television if possible and if there is a station near the community. This strategy will encourage and motivate the Somali people to reach for each other in times of crisis, and support the community group to help them receive the best public health services. As stated by Homan (206 p. 267), a thing that you may want to think is about people are not ask to participate, but giving them the opportunity to be part of something good and meaningful.
