Assignment 1: Discussion—ABC or Activity-Based Costing

Assignment 1: Discussion—ABC or Activity-Based Costing

Assignment 1: Discussion—ABC or Activity-Based Costing

In your readings this module, you were introduced to Activity-Based Costing or ABC. It is a method used to determine a reliable predetermined benchmark for the allocation of overhead costs to the products produced based on their activity levels. In this discussion, we will work a case study on ABC together. For your initial response, attempt to answer the questions yourself and post all the required items into the Discussion Area. You may want to post some elements during different days so the class can work this problem together. Then in your response postings, help each other with misunderstandings or miscalculations.

Tasks:

  • Examine the case below and then…
    • Calculate the amount of overhead allocated to small and large advertising campaigns under existing methods.
    • Apply activity-based costing to calculate the cost per cost driver for each of the cost pools.
    • Use the costs per cost driver to calculate the activity-based overhead applicable to small and large campaigns.
    • Calculate the percentage to be added to direct advertising costs to recover overhead costs under activity-based costing.

Merit-o-cracy PLC is a specialist advertising agency. It has been long-established but is experiencing difficulties in winning new business. The Chief Executive believes that its pricing methods are leading to the loss of large customer advertising campaigns while it is consistently winning smaller business.

Merit-o-cracy costs work for pricing purposes on the basis of direct advertising costs (i.e. space or time purchased from newspapers, radio and TV) plus 100%. The 100% is intended to cover all the overheads of the business, which run at $2 million per year. It does not include any profit margin. This budget cost comprises:

Creative staff                                        $500,000

Production staff                                    $750,000

Administrative & support staff              $300,000

Rental and associated costs                  $450,000

Merit-o-cracy classifies its advertising campaigns as either small or large. Of the 350 campaigns the agency wins, about 325 are classified as small. A typical small advertising campaign incurs direct advertising costs of $4,000 each (and therefore is allocated $4,000 of overheads under current methods). The other 25 advertising campaigns are large and incur direct advertising costs of $28,000 each.

Merit-o-cracy’s accountant has heard of activity-based costing. After speaking to the management team, she has gathered information on the most common causes of costs. She believes that creative staff costs are linked to the number of advertising campaigns the agency competes for. Production staff costs are related to the number of advertising campaigns the agency wins. Administrative and support staff costs are related to the number of customers the agency has. Rental and associated costs are people-based and as a similar number of staff is employed in each of the three departments, the costs should be equally shared.

The accountant has also collected data on the activity levels in each of the three departments over the budget period. These are:

            Creative

  • 800 advertising campaigns the agency bids for
  • 400 of these are bids for large campaigns and 400 for small campaigns

            Production

  • 350 advertising campaigns the agency wins
  • 325 of these are small campaigns and 25 large campaigns

            Admin & support

  • 400 customers the agency services
  • 300 of these are customers with small campaigns and 100 have large campaigns

Assignment 1: Introductory Discussion Question

Throughout this course, you will be presented with discussion questions, one in each module. For each of those discussion questions, be sure to do the following:

  • Read the discussion prompt thoroughly before responding to it, as well as any required lecture notes or assigned readings for the module.
  • Organize your thoughts and begin to compose your response. It may be helpful to do this in Microsoft Word so you can utilize the spell check and grammar check features of the software. You can then copy and paste your response to the Discussion Area, making sure you do so by the date indicated in the assignment. Please don’t post attachments to the discussion—the text of your response should be copied right into the body of your message for all to read. In general, all of your discussion assignment postings should be at least two full paragraphs (250 to 300 words) in length.
  • Respond to at least two of your peers’ discussion responses, as all discussion assignments require you to do. When you do, you may agree, disagree, question their assertions, or offer additional information on the topic. However, make sure to elaborate on your response by utilizing information from the module’s readings. Your participation posts will need to be on topic with the content you’ve learned about during the module—offering personal opinions and experiences will not be considered a substantive contribution to the discussion. All of your participation responses should be a solid paragraph (100 to 150 words) in length.
  • Avoid plagiarism at all costs by citing the readings correctly and composing your own original responses. Responses that copy ideas from the Internet or from another student will be considered plagiarism and will be treated as such.
  • Make sure to use the rules of correct English grammar and to spell check your work. This is an essay assignment worth 48 points and should be as polished as you can make it.

By Saturday, May 20, 2017, post your work to this Discussion Area. For this first discussion assignment, compose a response that addresses all of the following:

  • Begin by discussing your program of study and your career goals. How did you find yourself on this path? What drew you to this area of study, and what are some of your specific interests in the field? What do you hope to do with your degree when you graduate?
  • After you’ve completed the first part of your response, begin thinking of potential essay topics that are related to your academic or career interests. List three preliminary topics that you could potentially develop into fully researched, persuasive essays over the duration of this class. Be sure to include enough information so that your instructor and your classmates can get a good idea of what each topic might entail—you may need to write two or three sentences to adequately explain each topic idea.

DUE DATE: WEEK 10

Note: While representative of possible situations faced by Target & Walmart, all scenarios in this assignment are fictional.

Real Business

As you learned this week, understanding your competition and adjusting your own business accordingly is critical to a business’s success. A large discount retail store like Target competes not only with other discount retail store stores but also with those stores that offer just some of the products Target does, such as grocery stores. Market Research Managers are responsible for creating and improving processes for gathering information on various market conditions, competitors, and consumer trends in their companies’ industries. They are typically responsible for managing a team of researchers and reporting their findings to the head of the department. Teams across the company then use these findings to help improve products, guide marketing efforts, and more.

As a Market Research Manager, part of your role is to consistently analyze Target’s position relative to its competitors and report on these findings. As part of this process, you complete a SWOT analysis for each of Target’s main competitors each quarter. The quarter is coming to a close, and your boss has asked for the latest SWOT analysis for Walmart.

·       Identify 1-2 possible opportunities Target has to be more competitive with Walmart. For each opportunity, explain your rationale in 2-3 sentences.

Step 5: THREATS

Based on your own experiences shopping at Target and Walmart and the research you conducted:

·       Identify 1-2 possible threats that might diminish Target’s competitiveness with Walmart. For each threat, explain your rationale in 2-3 sentences.

Before you answer the questions below, read the following about bias and point of view:

Point of view or bias reminds us that information is rarely neutral. Because data is used in selective ways to form information, it generally represents a point of view.

  • Every writer wants to prove his point, and will use the data and information that assists him in doing so.
  • When evaluating information found on the Internet, it is important to examine who is providing the “information” you are viewing, and what might be their point of view or bias.
  • If you are looking at products produced and sold by that corporation, remember: you are looking at an advertisement.
  • If you are reading about a political figure at the Web site of another political party, you are reading the opposition.
  • Does this document reside on the Web server of an organization that has a political or philosophical agenda?
  • If you are looking for scientific information on human genetics, would you trust a political organization to provide it?
  • Never assume that extremist points of view are always easy to detect. Some sites promoting these views may look educational.
  • Remember that anyone can purchase an .org Website.

Questions:

  1. List the URL (Website address) of a source you are using for your Module One essay.   After consideration, is this a good source to use in your college paper? Why or why not? Explain.
  2. Respond to a classmate – look at the source your classmate has selected. Explain why you believe this is or is not  a good source to be used in a college paper.
