English Questions

1.1 In the argument chapter, you learned about expressed arguments (overt arguments attempting to persuade the audience towards a point of view) and implied arguments (arguments that appear on the surface not to be arguments but actually seek to persuade the audience of a point of view or views). For this DQ, provide a specific example from the media of an expressed argument and an implied argument and answer the following questions:

· What is the expressed argument you identified? What specific argument does the author make? What evidence does the author use to support his or her claims?

· What is the implied argument you identified? What specific argument does the author make? What evidence does the author use to support his or her claims?

· Why is it important to understand expressed and implied arguments?

· How might you use your understanding of expressed and implied arguments when drafting your first essay in this course?

Note: You may use visual arguments such as photos and pictures, but you will still need to explain your rationale for why you believe the author is making a specific argument.

2.1 Read “Legalizing the Organ Trade?” by Ritter, located on the Time website (copy and paste the link into the URL). http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1833858,00.html

As noted in Peter Ritter’s (2008), “Legalizing the Organ Trade?”, Singapore’s health minister, Khaw Boon Wan, argued that, “We may be able to find an acceptable way to allow a meaningful compensation for some living, unrelated kidney donors, without breaching ethical principles or hurting the sensitivities of others” (para. 2). In the definition essay assignment, you are asked to select a term, define the term, and offer evidence to support your definition of the term.

In this case, imagine you have selected the term meaningful compensation to define. You might ask yourself: What constitutes meaningful compensation for an organ donor, especially if the donor is poor and the recipient is wealthy? What examples of human organ sales can I find that match or do not match your definition of meaningful compensation? What other terms related to organ sales and donation would be suitable for an argument of definition?

2.2 In the Aristotelian or Classical Framework for argument, a writer might target an audience of readers that is undecided or neutral about the main claim (thesis statement) of the essay. A section is placed directly before the conclusion for acknowledging opposing viewpoints. Then the writer chooses to concede or refute that view.

Why does the writer not want to spend much time on an opposing viewpoint? Why mention that viewpoint at all? How might a concession help or hinder the main claim of the essay (the thesis)? What are some opposing viewpoints you might include in your definition essay?

3.1 Recall your readings in Topic 1 regarding human organ donation and sales. In the article, “Kidney Shortage Inspires A Radical Idea: Organ Sales,”

https://lopes.idm.oclc.org/loginurl=http://search.proquest.com.lopes.idm.oclc.org/docview/399092881?accountid=7374

Dr. Francis Delmonico believes that even a regulated human organ trade would be exploitative because “it’s the poor person who sells” (Meckler, 2007). Answer the following questions:

· Do you agree that allowing a poor person to sell an organ is an exploitative practice? Why or why not?

· What documented examples from real-life organ donors can you provide to help you demonstrate how a regulated human organ trade would (or would not) be exploitative?

· If you were writing your definition essay on the term exploitative, how would you define it?

You may revisit the Human Organ Donation and Sale Resource List from Topic 1 for resources. Be sure to cite all sources used to compose your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry according to GCU Style.

3.2 Chapter 2 of the textbook discusses two scenarios in which evidence may not meet some audience’s expectations. In the first scenario, two scientific studies are in conflict with each other In the second scenario, a child psychiatrist uses stories from his patients rather than statistics as evidence. Each case poses a problem regarding the use of evidence: We sometimes have difficulty reconciling conflicting pieces of evidence, and we are reluctant to see stories, rather than statistics, as valid evidence. In the essay that you are writing right now, what kinds of evidence have you found? In what way might it meet an audience’s expectations? Name the audience, discuss how it may meet–or not meet–the audience’s expectations, and explain why. Later in the week, compare your observations about evidence with those of your classmates.

4.1 To help you prepare for your Cause and Effect essay on donating or selling organs, brainstorm general topics of interest and conduct an online inquiry as to possible causes and effects.

For example, you might have an interest on the effect of social media on children younger than thirteen years of age. You research young children in their tweens and discover that these individuals are more readily exposed to online interactive groups, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Web pages themed to attract a younger audience; this creates a root cause with the effect of having a large social network of friends.

This result becomes a new cause that leads to the effect of stronger Web-based communication skills, which leads to intuitive and up-to-date technology skills. This result leads to overuse of or possible Internet obsession, which results in decreased participation of afterschool activities, such as sports or music groups. This result leads to lack of focus on homework and a significant drop in academic performance, which results in poor quality of student work. The result is repeating the same grade level.

Now, create your own cause-effect chain based on your online inquiry. Make sure the cause-effect chain is logical, plausible, and realistic.

4.2 We are continuing to work towards our Cause and Effect essay on donating or selling organs. Watch the local news or go online and read news as presented through CNN, Google, or MSN News. Choose a current story or news event of interest. Create a list of causes for the story or event. Discuss at least three “whys” (the causes) that led to the event and three projected plausible results (the effects) from the event. Your reply should discuss a total of three causes and three effects. Support each cause and result with an explanation.

5.1 As you have learned from this week’s readings, a cause-effect chain argues that one thing leads to another (e.g., “Increasing levels of acidity in sea water are harming the oceans’ coral reefs.”). A causal cause and effect chain links causal claims together as links in a chain. Remember your argument is only as strong as the weakest link in your chain.

Summarize the causal cause and effect chain used by the writer in the article from The New York Times. Was the argument persuasive? Why or why not?

· What has caused the growth of the illegal sale of human organs in some countries, a concept unthinkable 100 years ago?

· What has caused the growth of selling human organs on the black market?

· What are the causes you have identified and will write about in your draft?

· What are the effects you have identified and will write about in your draft?

5.2  There is common wisdom that states, “Correlation is not causation.” Explain in your own words what this phrase means. Now, read the current draft of your cause and effect essay. Consider how you might revise your essay in light of this saying. Describe what revisions you might need to make to your essay to ensure that your argument is logical, plausible, and realistic and does not present an argument that is illogical, far-reaching, or unrealistic.

6.1 Use the following questions to develop ideas for your proposal.

· What do you think is the most significant problem regarding the sale of organs?

· Why do you think it is a problem?

· Who has the power to solve this problem?

· Why has it not been solved up to this point?

· How can the problem be solved?

· What are the benefits and costs related to your solution?

Using strategies for argumentation discussed previously in class, develop some arguments for your proposal that you could use for your skeptical audience. Refer to Chapter 7 in the textbook for additional information on rebuttals.

6.2 To whom will you address your proposal? This person (or group) will be skeptical of your views. Will it be a friend or family member with different beliefs and values related to health care and/or the human body? Are there individuals in the medical community who hold different values than you do? How about a politician or media figure?

What are their views on the issue of selling human organs, and what do they think should be done about it? Summarize the views of your skeptical audience as fairly and accurately as possible.

During the week, review your classmates’ summaries of their skeptical audiences’ views. Constructively offer feedback on their summaries. Were the summaries fair, or did they seem biased? How can you tell? Offer suggestions on how to revise their summaries.

7.1 Four important steps when composing a proposal include (1) convincing the audience that there is a problem that needs to be solved, (2) explaining what you want your audience to do about the problem, (3) acknowledging opposing viewpoints or steps to solving the problem and (4) justifying the action you are asking your audience to take. What strategies will you use for each step? What will make your content for each of these steps effective? Later in the week, review answers that your classmates have provided and provide feedback on their ideas.

7.2 Many people have either engaged in an argument that seemed unresolvable or witnessed such an argument between friends and family members. Consider one of these arguments you have either experienced or witnessed, and then identify the fallacies that were expressed during this discussion or argument.

Note how the fallacies prevented the discussion from being resolved. What did you learn about fallacies from this experience that you can apply to your proposal essay? How might fallacies like these be avoided in proposal writing?

All answers must be 150-200 words and have a Cite in the answer. Be sure to cite all sources used to compose your answer.

Introduction

Even though strategy and tactics are bound to be used interchangeably, it is important to not that they are very distinct in regards to their purpose, roles, accountability and scope among others. For instance, in regards to the purpose, a strategy will give a clearly define the goals and objective of the organization as a whole. On the hand, tactic refers the use of specific resources within the organization that makes the lower level goals and objectives add up to the overall achievement of the mission of the organization. After getting the difference between the two words, one can, therefore, be able to know how and when best to use either or both of them in order to achieve their particular goals and objectives.

Discussion

1.      Importance of knowing difference between strategy and tactic

The business world is always characterized by some level of competition that makes the players in the industry try their best to outdo the other when reaching out to the targeted customers. As a result, these businesses end up innovative employee ideas in the manner in which they outshine the other competitors. This is what is seen in the case of JC Penny where the business embarked on a mission to create a new market by increasing its range of products to the customers. What this means is that customers are able to find all their shopping needs from food to home appliances under one roof. This is very convenient to customers especially those who are always time conscious because of their tight schedules. Moreover, the introduction of the specialty shopping is aimed at including more customers in its customer base.

With the accelerated closure of the JC Penny stores and focusing more on appliances, its is clear that the business is making some major changes in its business strategy. With this in place, the business is in a better position to not only attract new customers but also sell to the customers that it already had under the stores. The business aims at attracting customers from some of its major competitors such as Sears. Moreover, the level of competition in the market has greatly increased from businesses such as Wal-Mart, Target and Kohs among others have greatly to a state of confusion for the customers as they try to figure out who offers the best deals which make JC Penny effort bare little or no positive outcomes.

2.      Macy’s is making the same mistake as JC Penny

To reemphasize on the confusion created in the market by the rapid growth of Wal-Mart Mercy’s provides a perfect example. Just like the case of JC Penny, the management of Mercy’s opted to expand their wings and venture into the discounts and high end inside the same store. Even thought the management might have expected positive outcomes by taking the move, one thing that is clear that the tactics being used have proven to be ineffective. This is the case because of the move resulted in having both commodities as well as specialty items in the same place. As such as the business may have intended to increase customer experience and satisfaction by bringing everything in one place, customers end up being overwhelmed and as such become confused regarding what exactly they wanted to buy from the stores.

From the way things are going in the retail market, it is clear that Wal-Mart is out to get the how pie for itself. This is so because the company is not only shaking the physical stores and retailers but has also ventured into the online platform. Wal-Mart keeps on opening brick motor stores, and these play a major role in the giving Amazon a challenge in online retail.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is clear that understanding the difference between strategy and tactics will play a major role in helping a business or organization achieve its goals and objectives. From the explanations presented above, it is clear that Wal-Mart has been able to develop an effective strategy that is not only helping it realize its goals and objectives but also render the company a market leader. As such, using a tactic to overcome a strategy is bound to give average or negative results owing to the difference in the manner in which a strategy and a tactic are used.

Assignment Instructions One of the most important aspects of the learning process is applying feedback provided by your instructor. For this Assignment, here is what you need to do. Review your instructor’s comments and the iRubric carefully. Revise your first essay (Essay 1, Week 2) to show that you understand and have applied the feedback provided.  (Example: Perhaps you were marked down for using second person (you): “You are exposing yourself to many dangers if you smoke.” Simply correct the error: “Smoking presents many dangers.” The sentence is now in third person.) Save your essay as follows: Smith_REVISED_Essay1. We will not use Turnitin for this Assignment since your essay was previously submitted. Please note that your essay will NOT be regraded. Your instructor will examine your paper to see if you have made the necessary corrections. If so, you will receive full credit for this Assignment. (Important: It is unlikely that you will receive partial credit for this Assignment. If you have not made the necessary corrections, your instructor might ask you to revise and resubmit before you are given full credit. Your success in this course hinges on your learning from feedback, so you must be able to demonstrate that your writing is improving as we move along in this course.) Finally, at the bottom of your essay (after paragraph five), please respond the following questions. Do you understand your feedback?  Do you have any questions for your instructor? Do you have any problems or concerns that you would like to discuss with your instructor? Is there anything we can do to help? That’s it! Good luck and let me know if you have questions.    at the bottle my teacher said i did this wrong someone fix this

Sherman williams APU  Effects of Smoking  Smoking in detrimental to the body of consumers. It affects all the body parts thus rendering the humans to multiple diseases which reduces the health soundness of the individuals. In U. S, over 480,000 deaths annually are caused by smoking cigarette. More deaths has occurred in the U. S due to smoking than the deaths caused by war in U. S. over 90% of the smokers die due to lung cancer. This affects alveoli which then reduces the effectiveness of lungs thus causing respiratory complications (Peinado, 3069). Cigarette smoking increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The rate of development of heart disease and stroke is higher in smokers. Two out of four smokers are likely to suffer from coronary heart disease and stroke than nonsmokers.  The diminished health of the smokers increases work absenteeism and thus lowers productivity of smokers in various sector of the economy. Frequency of hospitalization and treatments of the diseases caused by smoking cigarette raises the cost of healthcare, strains the healthcare facilities and eats into the resource of the victims (Sayin, 201). Smoking also damages the victims’ blood vessels. It thickens or causes them to become narrow thus hampering the blood flow and pressure. Narrow blood vessels increase blood pressure and also may lead to vessel clotting thus blockages. Brain parts, legs and other body parts are deprived from blood circulation and some vessels may burst spilling blood in the brain. The cells die due to lack of oxygen and nutrition thus causing gaining or sudden deaths (Peinado, 3069). Smoking affects the mouth odor and the color of the victims’ teeth. Smokers’ breath is usually smelly. The teeth turn brown and gums may develop complications which will result to tooth rloss. In women, smoking reduces their fertility rates and increases cases of still births. Preterm delivery, Sudden infant death syndrome, ectopic pregnancy and birth of infants with orofacial clefts is frequent. Children from smoking mothers are usually lighter compared with normal children. Smoking reduces the strength of bones and thus increases the risk of broken bone (Sayin, 202). Other impacts of smoking include reduction of the sight of the victims. It may trigger an age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which retards vision. It causes type 2 diabetes mellitus and also makes the control of the disease difficulty. Smoking also causes body inflammation and decreases the immunity of the victims. It is also known to initiate rheumatoid arthritis (Sayin, 204). Definitely having carefully read through the feedbacks, I understand them. Consequently, I do not have any question, problem or concerns that I would like to discuss with the instructor over the essay.  My take is that a lot has been done to bail me out and will try my best to improve on the essay.      Work cited Peinado, Victor I., et al. “Plasma Levels Of Angiopoietin-2 In COPD: Effects Of Smoking And Pulmonary Hypertension.” B27. Feedback Please review the directions to this assignment. You are to read the comments sent to you on Essay One.   Then you are to use those comments to REVISE that essay. You keep turning in some essay about smoking and your essay ONE was NOT about smoking. Smoking is not even a topic that could be used for Essay One. You wrote about  a Christmas trip to Jerusalem for Essay One.  I will happily change your grade when you resubmit.

hw into your words pick any topic

Class,     One thing we can never get enough of is practice with library research and documentation. Let’s do more of it this week.      Select a PERSON, PLACE, or THING that you are interested in learning more about. This topic should be different from anything you have researched thus far during this course.     Using our library, locate ONE peer-reviewed article about this topic. Answer the questions below. Please number the questions, respond in complete sentences, but do not copy and paste the questions.     What is your topic?  (Examples—Michael Jackson or Paris, France) What interests you about this topic? What do you already know about this topic? (Hint: it is helpful to select topics that you already know a little something about. This helps you avoid this problem: “I didn’t know anything about my topic, so I used quotes and paraphrases for my whole essay.”) What else would you like to know about this topic? Read the entire article. Please provide a brief summary of your article. This should be in your own words. Do not copy and paste from the article, though you may include citations.  Pick one sentence from the article and put it here in either a quote or paraphrase. Please include a signal phrase and parenthetical citation. Pretend you are going to write an essay about this topic. List three topics that you would like to focus on for your thesis and body paragraphs. (Examples—three places you would like to visit in Paris, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre museum, and Père Lachaise Cemetery OR Michael Jackson’s childhood, accomplishments in music, and tragic death) This is how the article I chose would look on a Works Cited page. Use the library cite button!

Please read the instructions in each forum area carefully. Make your initial post by Wednesday, 11:55 p.m. ET. All other replies are due by Sunday, 11:55 p.m. ET.  Each initial post should be at least 250 words. Also, respond to at least TWO fellow students’ initial posts with at least 50 words each. Please do not simply compliment them on a job well done. Ask questions and/or provide thoughtful insight and continue the discussion they have started. You are also expected to reply to anyone who responds to your initial post. Remember, this is our place for our classroom discussion, so it’s important to keep the conversation going!  Label your parts for easy reading. Write in complete sentences but do not copy and paste the questions or instructions into your post. (This will not count towards your word count requirements.) Put all required parts in ONE initial post. Save your work to your desktop (or USB, cloud, etc.) first. Then copy and paste your work into the forum area using the “Paste as Plain Text” or “Paste from Word” icons. Use the “Start a New Conversation” button for your initial post. Click “Reply” to respond to fellow students’ posts. Your instructor will submit your work through Turnitin, so please ensure that your posts are completely your own work.

“I am your mother, and I should have a say in how you’re raised” (Walls 26).

“Mom felt that Grandma Smith nagged and badgered, setting rules and punishments for breaking the rules. It drove Mom crazy, and it was the reason she never set rules for us” (Walls 21).

“Some parents worried that their kids might get hit by lightning, but Mom and Dad never did, and they let us go out and play in the warm, driving water. We splashed and sang and danced” (Walls 16).

“If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (Walls 66).

“We had no pillows, but Dad said that was part of his plan. He was teaching us to have good posture. The Indians didn’t use pillows, either, he explained, and look how straight they stood” (Walls 18).

“She’d been reading books on how to cope with an alcoholic, and they said that drunks didn’t remember their rampages, so if you cleaned up after them, they’d think nothing had happened. ‘Your father needs to see the mess he’s making of our lives,’ Mom said. But when Dad got up, he’d act as if all the wreckage didn’t exist, and no one discussed it with him. The rest of us had to get used to stepping over broken furniture and shattered glass” (Walls 113).

“Unloved children grow up to be serial murderers or alcoholics” (Walls 83).

“At times I felt like I was failing Maureen, like I wasn’t keeping my promise that I’d protect her–the promise I’d made to her when I held her on the way home from the hospital after she’d been born. I couldn’t get her what she needed most–hot baths, a warm bed, steaming bowls of Cream of Wheat before school in the morning–but I tried to do little things” (Walls 206).

“‘Okay, kids’ Dad said, ‘the civilians are revolting. We better skeddadle'” (Walls 109).

“When Dad went crazy, we all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off, and that was what we did that night” (Walls 115).

“‘Your father’s the only one who can help himself,’ Mom said. ‘Only he knows how to fight his own demons'” (Walls 117).

“Just remember,” Mom said after examining the blisters, “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.”  “If that was true, I’d be Hercules by now,” Lori said (Walls 179).

“Being homeless is an adventure” (Walls 255).

“We may not have insulation,” Mom said as we all gathered around the stove, “but we have each other” (Walls 177).

Discussion Question- Project Management

Discussion Question- Project Management

Consider one of the following ethical situations that could arise when a company such as Trillo Apparel Company requests an outside contractor to perform work.

Situation 1

You need to hire contractors for the electrical work. You also know that getting the permits is going to be very difficult and may delay your project. You have a friend in the electrical business who knows an inspector that can be bribed to move your inspections to the top of the list. If you hire your friend’s company, you know you will have your inspections completed on time.

Situation 2

You need to hire inexpensive labor to build your work benches for the production floor. You have a bunch of college friends who are in need of work and the pay is good for this work. You also feel you might have more control over the workers since they are your friends. You know that your company usually takes bids for this type of work

Choose one situation and determine what potential ethics are involved in that situation. Discuss what you would do in this situation. Explain your reasoning.

English comp. II unit 2 DB

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Assignment:

Now that you have written about the topic that you selected in Unit 1, it is time to explore what others have said about that same topic. To begin the process, use the AIU library databases and online search tools to locate at least 6 sources that are related to your topic.

The best way to begin this search is by first reading encyclopedia articles on the topic, especially the encyclopedias in the AIU library. Encyclopedia articles provide a summary of current information and, most important, a list of books and articles about the topic. You can often find titles of useful works at the end of encyclopedia articles.

Remember, encyclopedias and other reference books (online or print) can be consulted, but their information cannot be cited in your paper. This means that material from reference works cannot be quoted or summarized in your paper. Reference works help you begin your exploration of a topic; however, reference works do not contain original material and therefore cannot be cited in your paper.

After consulting reference works, locate at least 6 credible sources related to your topic. These published works will inform you of arguments that are related to your topic. They can also provide evidence (facts, statistics, quotations, and examples) to support your own thesis and main points in the research paper that you will write later in the course.

There are two types of citations in APA style: in-text citations and reference citations. An in-text citation is an abbreviation. A reference citation lists all relevant information about a source. The following is a paragraph from a research paper on preventing juvenile delinquency that illustrates the difference between in-text and reference citations:

According to one expert, “Numerous warning signs can alert parents to children who are at risk of violent behavior later in life” (Friedman, 2014). Parents know that a child does not suddenly have moods swings and violent outbursts without some warning sign. Recognizing these signs in childhood can help prevent adolescent delinquency.
Friedman, J. (2014). The terror within: Recognizing and dealing with violent tendencies in children. Pediatrics for Parents, 23(4), 13.

The author and date in parentheses (Friedman, 2014) is an in-text citation. It appears in the sentence where the source was used and is an abbreviated form of the reference citation. All of the information in the paragraph was the student writer’s except what was in the sentence that included an in-text citation.

After the paragraph, you can see the full reference citation of the source. The reference citation provides all of the information that someone would need to find this source.

Complete the following for your assignment:

  • Create a list of 6 sources that you will find useful in developing your topic as you write about it in the next paper.
  • Each source must be listed as a reference citation. You should follow each reference citation for the 6 sources with a short paragraph of 3–4 sentences in which you comment on the source. You should comment on the author’s main points and how the source may be of use to you when writing your paper.
    • Did you find any strong arguments in the source that you had not thought of?
    • Did the source make you rethink your position in any way?
    • Did you see any facts, statistics, quotes, or examples that you could use to support your thesis?
  • Each reference citation must be in APA format. Several resources are available to help you format your reference citations in correct APA style, including the following:
    • You can refer to your eBook, English Composition. In your textbook for this course, please see “Reference Style” on page 191. Sample reference citation formats begin on page 192.
    • You can use citation machines. The most popular and most accurate citation machines are as follows:

Each of the six entries should look like this:

Johnson, D. T. (2011). American capital punishment in comparative perspective. Law & Social Inquiry, 36(4), 1,033–1,061.

Comment–America is the only developed nation that still imposes the death penalty. All other industrialized nations abolished capital punishment in the late 20th century, according to the source. Another peculiarity: although the death penalty is common in America, executions are rare, leaving prisoners lingering on death row for decades. America has the largest death-row population than any nation on earth.

Checklist

  • You should have 6 sources.
  • Each source should be listed as an APA reference citation.
  • A short commentary paragraph should follow each source.
