Ethical climate definitely impacts the behavior of people in any organization as it is based off of the values and beliefs that make up the organizational culture. I came across this article online which had some pretty good information as it related to ethical climate. It stated that ethical climate is a means offered to the organization in order to consolidate its loyalty and develop trust relationships, which are crucial for its credibility and sustainability (Chouaib & Zaddem, 2013 p. 1).  It also refers to a type of work environment reflecting organizational policies, procedures and practices with moral consequences (Chouaib & Zaddem, 2013 p. 2).  A positive ethical climate is essential, especially in this day an age where so many scandals are reported on leaders at the top of their organizations. The excessive pursuit of profit can make people do bad and unethical things. Not only money, but some people just don’t have a typical moral compass to follow and if they do, they disregard it and as a result find themselves in trouble.  I can’t speak for other organizations, but in the Navy we follow core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. We are always reminded to follow the Navy core values so it stays relevant in our organizations culture. Now, this doesn’t mean that everyone follows these of course, but for the most part it is embedded in us and these ethical values are shared by members and for that reason definitely impacts the behavior of most people in I think for the better. But it starts at the top. I think it is the responsibility of leadership in an organization to uphold and reinforce these values so that their subordinates follow suit. In the Navy, if juniors question their leaders values and morals, this can lead to a dysfunctional work environment. I’m sure in organizations where profit is a major factor, you run into cases where people are willing to do whatever it takes to make a sale or get their numbers up. This could be at the sacrifice of people’s morals and values, but greed can make people turn a blind eye to what is right. In this case, I’m glad my job doesn’t really focus on that so much so for the most part, we have a pretty ethical climate I’d say.

  One state economic policy for the state of North Carolina is to divide the state into economic zones.  The easiest way to divide the state is through the counties, as each county maintains statistical analysis of their economics.  There are 100 counties in North Carolina and the state governor, Roy Cooper addresses each county in a tier system.  There are three tiers, the bottom 40, mid 40 and top 20 (tier 1, 2, and 3 respectively).  Each is divided into economic activities and the counties located in the bottom and mid 40 are incorporated into various state programs and economically encouraging activities.  Targeting the less prosperous areas help build up and define a better living for parts of the state in the most need.  This type of economic encouragement has lent major companies developing in NC.  Google established a headquarter office at a cost of 1.2 billion dollars, employees 110 and gave 4 million dollars to local schools.  All of this was built in the tier 1 county, Lenoir county.

              This program of incentives is a success and will continue to be so as Amazon is looking for a headquarters in NC as well.  Currently NC houses 14 fortune 500 company headquarters and 26 fortune 1000 company headquarters.  The low cost of living and economically thriving business climate with a three percent tax and with access to four international airports make NC an ideal place to grow a business.  The state governance allows many incentives to increase and thrive in the business industry that creates jobs for the local people and increase the quality of life for the citizens.  An added benefit to companies in NC, is some of the nation’s top-rated schooling systems in the University of North Carolina system, Duke University, Chapel Hill, and numerous others increase qualified workplace pool.

Another term for “tightening controls” is “micromanagement.” When management decides to begin to tighten the reins, the damage can be extensive with unforeseen repercussions. Employees who once showed initiative and high levels of productivity will quickly lose their drive as the boss continually attempts to control more and more aspects of any particular project or task. Another unintended consequence will be employees start to work against a micromanager, either actively or passively.

Consider the example of an employee who recognizes an error in a line of code made by their boss. In a normal working environment, the employee would speak up and correct the issue, but in a situation where a micromanager has alienated his staff, the error goes uncorrected. An uncorrected error could potentially cost time and money to rectify after the fact.

Micromanagement with the best intentions can also be seen as bullying, which can cause a drastic drop in morale and force employees to quit. In her book, My Boss is a Jerk: How to Survive and Thrive in a Difficult Work Environment Under the Control of a Bad Boss, Kathleen Rao lists seven items as consequences of micromanagement on employee health. (Barnes, 2015)

1. Stress. This can affect the employee’s work and home life.

2. Health problems, such as heart problems or high blood pressure.

3. Economic problems and job insecurity. Fear of being demoted or losing your job.

4. Emotional strain due to verbal or emotional abuse from the manager, which negatively impacts self-esteem.

5. Fatigue from overwork.

6. Lack of appreciation leaves employees unmotivated because they don’t know if their work is appreciated or valued.

7. Lack of confidence makes meeting with the manager difficult because the manager looks down on the employees.

So, managers who tighten control fail to think paradoxically. In this case, the paradox is “The more control a manager has, the less control a manager has.”

When would scope creep or gold plating be acceptable for a project? (1 Page)

Both scope creep and gold plating should be avoided as they often cause project to be delayed and/or over budget. A project scope is essentially the boundaries or parameters of the project. These are determined during the planning phase. Scope creep occurs when the project grows beyond the original plans, which creates scheduling issues as well as budgetary issues, both can be disastrous and negatively affect the project’s success. Gold plating on the other hand is adding things to the project that are not included in the project scope without prior approval from the customer. 

Both of scope creep and gold plating are generally considered bad and should be avoided by project teams and their leadership. In my opinion, there are only a few times when I would consider either phenomenon as acceptable. First involves safety related issues. If during a project, a safety issue was either not planned for or was identified during the project, one could argue that these could be necessary reasons to increase the scope of the project. The second reason that either scope creep or gold plating would be acceptable is when the customer or client if fully aware of the issues and is willing to adjust the budget and/or schedule to accommodate the increased scope. It is up to the project team to identify any issues that could create scope creep or gold plating, however; it is the responsibility of the project manager to communicate the issues to the powers that be to ensure vital information is shared with the key stakeholders to they can ultimately make the final decision on how to proceed. 

 

A critical component of any project planning is to develop a plan that defines the projects scope by identifying the projects objectives, work breakdown structure and finally by monitoring and controlling the project’s progress. A mandatory role that the project manager plays is the role of scope manager because “Without scope management there is no project” (Turner, 2016, p.149).

Some of the strategies involving others that can be used to plan organizational change include creating a sense of urgency about the need for change, leading a group of individuals with ambition for the change, creating and communicating a strong vision, and anchoring the changing in the corporate culture (Russell, 2013).  Sometimes companies need to change the direction of their goals; for instance, maybe the funding for the organization has changed and managers are required to take the organization into a new direction.  Whenever there is a change, several initiatives need to be taken in order for employees to take action and do their part to make the goal happen.  Often times it can be difficult for employees to get along smoothly with organizational change.  It is important to incorporate the need for change by communicating the vision for the change and the strategy for executing that change.  Managers need to clearly define the new company goals and how that is going to happen so employees understand how their efforts will be utilized.  Once the vision is clear, this needs to be clearly communicated throughout management gaining support from all relevant department leaders.  Managers and leaders must lead their teams in the direction of the organization’s goals in order to effectively keep employees on target.  The leaders must stay on goal, building the change continuously, focusing on short term goals in order to motivate employees, and demonstrate such behavior by their actions and words (Russell, 2013).  Leaders can not stray from the new target goals, because the employees may see this and company direction could be confusing or counterproductive.

Solar Co. Inc., a solar panel manufacturing and installation company, has recently encountered a series of scandals and bad publicity relating to defective solar panels, poor workmanship, and employee allegations of harassment by executives within the company. One claim resulted in a two-year trial which Solar Co. lost; all other claims were settled out of court.

Solar Co. enters into a contract with XYZ Media to prepare a 6-month national advertising and public relations campaign to help restore its tarnished reputation at a cost of $600,000. XYZ Media launches the campaign, and it is successful for the first two months until XYZ’s computer servers are hacked and all client information is lost because XYZ failed to have adequate backup systems in place. In addition, social media account information and passwords were compromised, resulting in derogatory and inappropriate posts being made on all of XYZ’s social media accounts for several hours. Because XYZ was managing Solar Co.’s social media presence at the time, Solar Co.’s social media accounts were also taken over by the hackers for a brief time and filled with damaging posts.

XYZ issues a public apology; however, Solar Co. wishes to terminate the contract with XYZ and receive a refund of the $200,000 it paid for the first two months of the campaign due to the damages caused by the computer hack. XYZ refuses to cancel the contract or issue a refund, insisting that it can successfully continue the campaign and re-create all of the material that was lost. Background

In the Gospel of Luke, we have some of the best loved teaching stories told by Jesus.  The interesting thing is that when you dig into some of these teachings stories – and you take into consideration the laws and customs of first-century Palestine – the meaning of the stories no longer seems like a slam dunk.  We begin to be puzzled by what Jesus could have meant – which is arguably JUST what Jesus intended to do with these stories!  Wisdom teachers historically try to get people to understand the idea that things are rarely black and white – that is, they may not be what they appear to be. 

Jesus’ teaching stories and parables frequently upend or reverse traditional thinking.  Remember that Jesus said,  “And people will come from east and west, from north and south, and dine in God’s empire. Those who will be first are last, and those who will be last are first.”  (13:29-30)  The meaning of this verse appears to be this:  Be prepared to be surprised!  The empire of God is not what you think it is.  In fact, it may be the exact opposite (first will be last, and last will be first).  Also remember that Jesus says that God makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.  There is no black and white thinking in God’s empire. 

So, in looking at the parables, lets first make sure we are all on the same page regarding the meaning and function of parables.  Our textbook defines “parable” in this way:

A brief narrative or picture.  It is also a metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness, and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt about its precise application to tease it into active thought.  

This implies that the very purpose of the parables is to “arrest” (or put a halt to) automatic and conventional thinking – and to cause you to STOP and think again!  Dig deeper, think outside the box.  But, above all else, THINK!  Don’t let others tell you what you understand.  

If we wish to truly understand any of the parables, it is especially important that we interpret them through the lens of the time and place in which they were told – first century Palestine.  But how can we do this since we do not live in first-century Palestine?  The answer is that we can do a bit of research into some of the historical information that we DO have from that time.

     b.   The Parable of Leaven

These parables are found back-to-back in Luke 13.  While you may think you understand exactly what Jesus is saying in these two little parables, think again!  Read this little essay on the perception of Mustard seed in first-century Palestine.  And then do a little of your own research on the meaning of leaven as it is used in the Bible.  Jesus is comparing the empire of God to both the mustard seed and leaven.  How does Jesus reverse conventional thinking with these two parables?
