or some, advocacy might conjure images of speaking at a congressional hearing or soliciting petition signatures at library entrances. Yet, social workers engage in advocacy as an agent of social change in numerous ways:

  • Case advocacy—When a social worker addresses the lack of services or resources at the micro level, educates the client about available resources and programs, or fights for clients’ rights
  • Legislative advocacy—When a social worker addresses a policy gap at the macro level and provides information and suggestions to legislators in order to close that gap
  • Community advocacy—When a social worker represents the needs of a community at the mezzo level by engaging in group-oriented activities, such as holding a town meeting to educate the neighborhood about a particular issue they are facing

Reflecting as a social worker, what are the benefits to engaging in an act of advocacy? Are there risks associated with being an advocate? Do the risks ever outweigh the need to advocate for what is just?

Throughout this term, you have been asked to engage in an act of advocacy. For this Discussion, you will reflect on the advocacy in which you engaged and discuss both risks and values related to advocacy.

By Day 3

Post:

  • Describe the advocacy in which you engaged this term.
  • Explain how the concepts from this week’s resources apply to the act of advocacy in which you engaged.
  • Describe potential risks that you considered or that may exist for a social worker who serves as an advocate.

By Day 6

Respond to two of your colleagues:

  • Explain how social work ethical values relate to advocacy.
  • Describe how you might make decisions about when and where to engage in advocacy based on the risks your colleague identified.

Discussion 1: You’re the Editor

The APA Publication Manual is an essential reference guide for all students and practitioners in the social and behavioral sciences. The purpose of this Discussion is to assist you in becoming familiar with and applying key parts of the manual. For this Discussion, you will play the role of an editor who must provide feedback to the writer, identifying and correcting flaws in the writer’s use of citations, quotes, and references. How would you make the writer’s work reflect the language of the profession?

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • View the video APA Citations Part I: The Methods to the Madness, and read the Study Notes from the Learning Resources.
  • Become familiar with the APA Publication Manual; review Chapter 6, “Crediting Sources,” and Chapter 7, “Reference Examples,” and note their contents and the variety of topics covered.
  • Review the “Assignment Sheet: Social Change” document (located in this week’s Learning Resources area) for an excerpt that includes quotes, paraphrased information, and reference information without format.
  • Review the Course Announcement from your Instructor about the peer-review process, and note the colleagues that you have been paired with.

With these thoughts in mind:

Complete the following steps by Day 3:

Step 1: Select one paragraph from the Social Change excerpt to edit. This document is found in the Learning Resources.
Step 2: Referring to Chapter 6 of the APA Publication Manual, revise the paragraph in correct APA format, rewriting the citations, quotations, and references as necessary. Use the references listed for your paragraph number as your citation sources.
Step 3: For this Discussion, the references for each paragraph are listed in the Social Change excerpt. These references are not in correct APA format. Using the information from Chapter 7 of the APA Publication Manual, put the references for your paragraph in correct APA format.
Step 4: Post your edited paragraph and references to the Discussion 1 board.

Paragraph to edit:

Several key individuals and ideas that have shaped the philosophy of social change. The first of these is Mahatma Gandhi. According to Kapadia, Gandhi believed that ideas and ideals had no value if they were not translated into action.Gandhi talked frequently about social change and service to others: The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Implementing positive social change can be a difficult process. Gandhi was asked why people should not just achieve their goals by any means necessary. He believed that the means are connected to the end. Gandhi wrote: every problem lends itself to solution if we are determined to make the law of truth and nonviolence the law of life. According to Pal, Gandhi influenced many important social change movements and leaders. Some leaders who have acknowledged his influence are: Dr. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Aung San Suu Kyi and Rigoberta Menchu.

Case study

Instructions

For this assignment, you will first review the following case study:

A textile manufacturer is closing its North Carolina plant and moving the production of its products to a developing nation in Southeast Asia. The primary reason for the move is because the lower labor cost will allow the organization to benefit from the new location.
Proponents of the decision laud the move as a means to save the organization by taking advantage of the free market and finding cheaper methods of producing the company’s goods.
Opponents of the decision state that a trust existed between the company and the employees and that a breach of trust will occur due to this decision. Additionally, opponents cite recent findings that contractors in the Southeast Asia region, where the company is moving, have been cited for utilizing child labor and failing to provide working conditions equivalent to those in the United States.
Officials in the Southeast Asia region have answered the criticisms of the use of child labor by pointing out that oftentimes children are the only individuals in a family who are capable of working, and to deny them that opportunity would create even greater hardships on the already desperately poor population.

Next, review the article by Peslak (2005), and reflect on what you have learned about deontological (actions focused) and teleological (consequences focused) frameworks.

Peslak, A. R. (2005). An ethical exploration of privacy and radio frequency identification. Journal of Business Ethics, 59(4), 327-345. Retrieved from https://libraryresources.columbiasouthern.edu/login?url=https://search-proquest-com.libraryresources.columbiasouthern.edu/docview/198203994?accountid=33337

For this assignment, you will now write a paper that discusses whether this move discussed in the case study is ethical from the perspective of ONE of the following stakeholders:

  • workers in North Carolina,
  • stockholders (owners), or
  • workers in Asia.

Utilize the CSU Online Library to locate two sources to use as references to support your paper. Your paper should be two to three pages in length.

Be sure to include the rubric elements from the guidelines below:

  • The analysis should present an insightful and thorough discussion with strong arguments and evidence.
  • The content should be highly relevant and informative while remaining on topic.
  • Accuracy and close attention to detail should be clearly evident in all parts of the assignment.
  • The writing should be clear and concise with proper sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation, and it should be free from spelling errors.
  • The number of sources should meet or exceed assignment requirements, and all sources should be academically credible and properly cited using APA formatting.

Discussion 2: Preparing for Academic Success: Managing Your Time and Resources

Many students begin their graduate programs without considering how they will incorporate their studies into their current responsibilities and schedules. Online learning offers flexibility, but this is within the framework of a program that is built around weekly assignments and due dates.

In this week’s Discussion, you will begin to think about what you and your colleagues bring to this journey in terms of time management skills, abilities, and knowledge that can help you all succeed.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Reflect on your current schedule. During an average week, what days and specific hours will you be able to set aside for your academic studies?

Consider what you need to do to create the time required to pursue your graduate degree. What factors could interfere with your time management plan? What strategies do you need to put into place to assure success?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4. an explanation of at least one strategy that  you will use to help you overcome those challenges to completing your degree that might also be useful to your colleagues.  Describe what your weekly schedule will look like in order to accommodate preparation for assignments and meeting due dates. Describe any supports you will need to put into place in order to create this time. Also, explain your back-up plan for technical problems or personal issues that might arise. Identify at least one best practice that you plan to use to manage your time and resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings and note the similarities and differences compared to what you shared.

Respond by Day 6 to at least two of your colleagues, and continue the Discussion through Day 7 to further develop your thoughts and ideas about this topic.

My name is Connie Taylor, I am from Marietta, GA.  I am currently employed with Lockheed Martin, working as an RN in the onsite Wellness Center.  I am currently in the process of earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration.  I plan, in the future, to be promoted to practice manager in the clinic which I am currently employed.

Complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard medical care.  CAM may include treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, herbal remedies, dietary supplements, meditation, and relaxation, amongst many others.

I currently practice as a registered nurse.  I work with other health care professionals, including NPs, MAs, MDs. Medical professionals tend to be very facts driven and results oriented in patient treatment.  I would agree that I lean more toward a standard medical care approach.  My concerns with the CAM approach to medicine, is that some practitioners make exaggerated claims about curing various diseases and encourage patients to fore go conventional treatment.  I do believe this may lead to delays in care and can effect patient safety. Some supplements may have potentially serious interactions with prescription medications.  I do, however, believe that an integrative medicine approach can be very beneficial to patients.  Integrative medicine combines standard medical care with CAM practices to heal the mind, body and spirit.

Part 2: Although Columbus was Spain’s most famous explorer,  I feel that the most interesting explorer to come from Europe was Cortez. Cortez did not give up when he was ran out of the Aztec Empire, but in 1521 formed a civil war against Moctezume. However, it was not the natives he united to fight that took down the empire, but the disease Cortez introduced to the Aztecs. Small pox was the demise of Tlaxcalan. Cortez, motivated by Gold, God and Glory, was then able to use the native people to shape the Americas.

The Native Americans were different from Europe in religion, values and land ownership. The natives believed that the land belonged to no one, but was to be used by any who needed it. Europeans look at land ownership as power. The Europeans felt that their religion is the only religion and they mission was to bring the natives to Christianity.

Module Overview

In this module, you will explore efficiency and effectiveness as they relate to labor. Workforce personnel have a significant impact on product quality and services rendered. This quality can be heavily impacted by effectiveness and efficiency. A company’s reputation and customer satisfaction ratings are often defined by the workforce. However, the workforce can only be as good as resources allow. Leaders in management often talk about improvements in employee effectiveness and efficiency as a means to improve business. However, it must be understood that effectiveness is very different from efficiency (Chaffey, 2014).

Efficient employees produce rapidly and smartly. Employees who consistently produce at a high level are effective. Judiciously applying effectiveness and efficiency can help produce superior products more rapidly and with potentially fewer resources. However, efficiency and effectiveness are not interchangeable terms: Efficiency is not always effective, and effectiveness is not always efficient.

Effectiveness can be considered the outcome of the actions of employees and managers. This means that, together, personnel who demonstrate workplace effectiveness also help produce superior results. Effectiveness is often measured through performance reviews. If performance evaluations are the measure of effectiveness, then care must be taken in the preparation of those evaluations to ensure that they truly measure the appropriate characteristics. Employees must be rewarded for their strengths, and employees’ skills must be enhanced via training to support required improvements in effectiveness. All personnel must recognize their impact on effectiveness and understand how their performance affects the company overall.

This module will focus on the many factors in the workplace that have an impact on effectiveness, including the workplace’s environment, safety, layout, and available equipment, and how those factors must be addressed by management.

In this week’s lecture we discuss how Physicians (..think, Part B; Outpatient; RBRVS; Professional Component; Fee-for-Service/Fee Schedule) are paid for their services. This reimbursement methodology, while similar in structure, is completely different from how Hospitals (…think, Part A; Inpatient; MS-DRGs; Technical Component; PPS) are reimbursed.

You will need to research what challenges/impacts/synergies occur as a result of difference. This may require the use of more than one article. Remember to always use scholarly articles and cite your sources in APA format.

It is best to use the IUPUI library to access google scholar to find scholarly articles that would be applicable for this assignment. Below I have provided instructions on how to access google scholar via the IUPUI library:

You can access google scholar via the IUPUI library at no cost. Go to http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/ (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) on that page you will see “what are you looking for?” Click on “Articles” and type in the search engine what you are looking for i.e. consumer informatics, and then click on the magnifying glass. This will take you to google scholar and it will list all the different articles related to the subject you are searching for. If you look to the right of this same screen, you will see “Find it at IUPUI” and this means you can access this article. Click on “Find it at IUPUI” and it will take you to a 360 Link where you will see the words links to content and you will click on the word “Journal”. This will either take you to the article or several Journal articles related to your search topic. Also, if you come across an article that is of great interest to you that does not have “Find it at IUPUI” next to it, that means you do not have access to that article, but you could put in a request via inter-library loan to see if you can gain access. If you need additional assistance, please contact the IUPUI library at (317)274-0469 and they will walk you through the process.

I’d like you to research what challenges/impacts/synergies occur as a result of difference. Utilizing the article review format below – share your findings with me & let’s continue our learning journey!

Your article cannot be any older than 2014. So, you must select an article dated between 2014 – 2017.

Please follow the Article Review Format provided below:

Principles of Marketing

Instructions

The marketing mix is used within the implementation of the marketing strategy. Please select one of the industries listed below, and search for information about the marketing mix used by at least two companies in your selected industry:

  • soft drink,
  • fast food/restaurant,
  • hotel,
  • cell phone provider,
  • banking,
  • automobile,
  • airline, or
  • entertainment.

Provide an example of the four areas of the marketing mix—product, price, placement, and promotion—used by each of your selected companies.

Discuss where their marketing mix strategies are similar and where they are different. Explain why.

Identify the product positioning and brand strategy used by your two chosen companies. Relate the importance of product positioning to their brand strategy.

Also, consider the element of ethical promotion and social responsibility toward consumers.

In addition to company websites, http://www.ibisworld.com/ and http://www.mergent.com/ are excellent resources to find information about markets and individual companies.

Your research project must include an introduction. You must also reference at least one journal article from the CSU Online Library and two articles from business-related or news websites; therefore, your essay should be supported by at least three sources. Your research project must be at least four pages in length and double-spaced, not counting the title and reference pages. All sources used must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Use APA style guidelines for formatting. An abstract is not required.

Healthcare Management

Instructions

By the end of this course, you will need to prepare and submit a management action plan (MAP) addressing a specific healthcare problem or scenario. This can be either a “real world” management problem within your own healthcare organization or a scenario from the list in the Unit II Project Topic assignment.

Click here to view an example of a completed MAP

Please include documentation of all six steps shown below in your submission of the MAP assignment.

  1. Clarify the Problem or Opportunity for Improvement (OFI)
Clearly describe the problem or OFI that you have selected for your MAP. Why is it important to resolve this problem right now? What are the consequences of not resolving this problem right now?

  2. Clarify your Measurable Goal
Clearly describe the desired outcome from your MAP implementation. What are you trying to accomplish? How will successful MAP implementation be measured and assessed? What realistic constraints do you have as you begin creation of your plan? Consider limits on time, money, and other resources that are specific to your MAP.

  3. Prepare a List of Possible Actions
Consider possible root causes of the OFI. Why do you believe the problem exists? Brainstorm and present a list of all possible actions that you may need to take in order to achieve your MAP goal. At this stage, focus on generating as many different options and ideas as possible. It is likely that not all of your ideas will make it into your final MAP. Write down your ideas just as they come to your mind, trying not to judge or analyze them at this stage.

In your brainstorming, be sure to consider ideas* involving the following:

    • leadership,
    • governance,
    • clinical performance,
    • physicians,
    • nurses,
    • clinical support services,
    • knowledge management,
    • human resources,
    • financial management,
    • internal consulting, and
    • marketing.
    • *It is understood that some of these areas may not apply to your particular MAP, but all areas should at least be considered in this process.
  4. Organize your Key Action Steps into a Management Action Plan
Decide on the sequencing of your key action steps. For each key action step, what other steps must be completed before that specific action can be taken? Rearrange your key action steps into a sequence of ordered activity. Then, look at your plan once again. Are there any ways to simplify the plan further before presenting it?

  5. Accountability
For each key action step, assign a responsible party or group within your organization (by position, department, or team name, not by individual name), and assign a suspense date by which the key action step must be completed. Then, based upon all of your key action steps and their suspense dates, provide a realistic completion date for the entire MAP.

  6. Measurement and Monitoring
Now, explain in detail how you will measure the success of your MAP following implementation and how you will monitor ongoing performance to prevent regression and loss of the positive change that has taken place.

Your plan should consist of no less than four pages, and any outside sources should be cited and referenced using APA formatting.

Ds 1

Discussion: Psychological Perspectives and Determinants of Behavior

Each psychological perspective offers a unique vantage point or lens through which to view human behavior. Consider violent behavior and, in particular, school shootings as an example. After a school shooting occurred, you probably recall hearing arguments from survivors, students, politicians, news anchors, bloggers, co-workers, family, and friends about why the shooter opened fire in a school. Whether you were conscious of it or not, each of these arguments could be attributed to a psychological perspective. For example, you may have heard people say that the incident occurred because the shooter played too many violent video games (behaviorist perspective), was severely abused as a child (psychodynamic perspective), or had a chemical imbalance (biological perspective). You may have also heard people say that the shooter lacked basic human needs (e.g., stable home and social support; humanistic perspective) or perceived his or her treatment by others as being unfair or unjust (cognitive perspective). Based on this example, you can see how psychological perspectives support and offer explanations for specific behaviors. You also can probably see the degree to which one’s biology (i.e., nature) and environment (i.e., nurture) are evident in each psychological perspective.

In this discussion, you will consider how psychological perspectives and one’s biology and environment explain and contribute to a variety of behaviors.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the psychology perspectives described on the Simply Psychology website and consider which perspectives interest you the most.
  • Review the remaining Learning Resources on nature and nurture. Think about how nature and nurture relate to human behavior and to the different psychological perspectives.
  • As you view this week’s media, consider the interplay between biology, experience, and behavior.

By Day 4

Post a response to the following:

Briefly describe the psychological perspective that interests you the most, and why. Then, explain how nature and nurture each contribute to behavior according to the psychological perspective you chose. Finally, evaluate how the interplay between biology and environment can impact behavior.
