Checklist for Review of Commemorative Speech

Audience—Is the audience and the occasion apparent?

Title—Does the title that fit well with the commemorated person or group or occasion? Introduction—Does the speech include an attention-getting important or characterizing event or trait or facts or story or quote? Was this something to which the audience could relate and feel?

Body—Were these issues addressed in the speech?

1. Reason to commemorate this person or event.

2. Relationship of the speaker to the person or event, including how this relates to the audience’s lives.

3. Specific examples of what this person has accomplished, achieved, or contributed, who has benefited from the life of this person or group, and why it would matter to the audience.

4. Impression or impact the person or group has made on others and how this relates to the audience.

5. What the audience can learn from what was described about the individual or group.

6. An anecdote, short story, brief list of facts, or short story, or something else memorable to wrap up the main ideas before closing the speech.

Conclusion—A conclusion that both emphasized the values of the commemorated person or group, and at the same time, gave the audience a way to remember the main message (such as a turn of a phrase, a vivid metaphor, or a word-painting, or other strong visceral or visual closing)

Begin by writing the film’s plot (Do not retell the whole film) in one well-written paragraph using your own words.

In the second paragraph, you should state some insight about the characterization of the characters in the film. (Use the following questions to guide your response).

• Describe the physical description of any two main characters in the plot.
• What are the character’s most innermost dreams, feelings, and thoughts?
• What are the character’s reactions towards each other during the development of the plot?

“Pride”

INSTRUCTIONS: After viewing the film “Pride” more than once, think about the statement and respond to the questions below:

Focus on the film “Pride” as moral, or making a social statement. In this approach, it is called the humanistic approach because we are focusing our attention on the statement that makes the film important. The humanistic approach is built around a statement that teaches us something. In this kind of evaluation, we must determine if the acting and the characters have meaning beyond the context of the film itself, morally, or socially that helps us gain a clearer understanding of some aspect of life, human nature, or the human condition.

We judge the film as an expression of ideas that reflect intellectual, moral, social, or cultural importance that influence our lives for the better.

Acting, cinematography, lighting, editing, sound, and screenwriting are all judged in terms of how effectively they contribute to the communication of the film’s theme.

Assignment 2.1: Justification Report – Part 1-0–

In Assignments 2.1 and  2.2,  you will be building up a formal, researched justification report (one part at a time) that culminates in a recommendation to implement a particular product, service, or program in your place of employment. This recommended product, service, or program should resolve a problem that you identify in your workplace and should be directed to your employer (even if you do not actually plan to share it with your employer).

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

• Problem Statement (for Question 1)
• Overview of Alternatives (for Question 2)
• Criteria (for Question 3)
• Methods (for Question 4)

Write a two (2) page, single-spaced report in which you:

1. Describe in detail a problem at work, persuading and convincing the reader that it needs fixing.
2. Provide a detailed description of two (2) possible solutions (“alternatives”) that could be implemented to resolve the problem identified in Question 1.
3. Describe five (5) criteria that you will use to measure the worth of each alternative in Criterion 2. Note: The alternative that satisfies the most criteria to the highest degree will be the one you recommend later to your employer. Criteria are standards that the audience values and are therefore used to measure the worth of each alternative (common examples include cost, desirability, durability, efficiency, time it will take to implement, and practicality).
4. Describe in detail how you will conduct the research needed to determine the best recommended alternative to your employer.

Your assignment must:

• Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
