Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Summative Discussion Board

Review and reflect on the knowledge that you have gained from this course. Based on your review and reflection.

  • What were the most compelling topics learned in this course?
  • How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?
  • What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

The main post should include at least 1 reference to research sources, and all sources should be cited using APA format.

Responses to Other Students: Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with a reply of 100 words about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening.

student 1:

I have taken a homeland security class in undergrad and I was not pleased with it at all. The material was very hard to follow as we had to memorize a lot of acronyms. I was dreading this class because I thought It would be the same as before but I was pleasantly surprised when I actually ended this class. I was able to learn the material in a different manner and the class flowed very well. The discussions helped because we later used that same information for our individual projects so that made it easier to understand and complete. The instructor was very thorough and I appreciated the extra material that was provided in reference to writing skills. Overall, I learned not only about terrorism and homeland security, but my writing skills as well.

student 2:

What were the most compelling topics learned in this course?

Most all the topic in this course was compelling because since I started in this course I have learned many different things about how the laws work for different things. For instant learned how the Homeland Security work and how it is broken down into the different departments that is involve to get things done in order to make sure what each department duty is so that nothing fall through the wall because things wasn’t done like they should because the person or persons who work in each department are doing the job that they are getting paid to do.

How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?

The discussion board was the best thing that the school could have around because will the communication through the discussion board you are able to see and learn from one another about the assignments, so that you are able to see how other students write about the same assignment but in a different way. Another thing is that from the discussion board you are able to learn things that you don’t about because like the old saying is that you aren’t never to old to learn something because will don;t know everything because if we did we wouldn’t have to go to school all because it will be useless. There isn’t anything still until to be clarified because with all of the communication in the classroom and discussion board you are communicate that is the best thing that could happening at this time in school.

What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

Nothing could be yielded because everything that the the way that we are doing in school now is great and done make any changed because the way things is going in the right direction without any problem or problems because everyone is on the same page  because everyone is communicate the way the such so that we get to know each other.

Respond to these three

R.H.

I agree with positive discipline.  It teaches children to be responsible and respectful. Positive discipline is based on the understanding that discipline must be taught and it also teaches. It offers a positive long term affect for children. Adults must also model in a positive way for the children. Children develop effective communication and problem solving skills. Positive discipline help the children learn new skills like problem solving.

I was brought up only aware of the negative discipline and I hadn’t heard of positive discipline until now. Some people may see positive discipline s a way of letting children have their way but that is not true. Adults are still guiding children along and offering assistance when needed in a positive way.

T.M.

A form of positive behavior is guidance which is pointing out, showing the way, leading, or directing (Marion,2015). Redirecting a student is like showing them there are other ways to handle negative things and turn them into something that is positive. An example would be a a student hitting another student because they want a toy that the other student has. It’s a teachers job to positively reinforce and redirect that child, by showing him/her that there are other toys that they can play with. It is also important to tell children to use gentile hands when playing with their friends.
I can only say that I agree with this positive discipline to a certain extent. Most children learn from positive discipline, but their are some children that need that stern hard punishment. I believe some children take better to negativity than others. For example one of the children my class will not listen to positive reinforcements. He thinks it’s funny when teachers try to redirect his negative behavior. He also continues the negative behavior, and then continues to act even worst. He needs a stern discipline method in order to understand. I believe that this particular student doesn’t have the correct guidance from his parents therefore he’s out of control when he comes to school. I think it all starts at home. When parents and teachers and parents join together when guiding and disciplining it is a much better outcome. One insight I gained from reading is that guidance  is a positive form discipline, I never knew that it could be considered as a form of discipline at all. I just thought it meant redirecting.

R.A.

Discipline comes from the root disciplina, which means teaching or learning. Guidance is a form of discipline and is always a positive one. When we guide children, we are directing them because we know that children “just don’t know what to do” as Merilyn Gootman mentioned in the video program. We also know where children should go and have the map. It is our responsibility, as adults to make that map as fun and as interactive as possible.

I absolutely agree with the principles and strategies associated with positive discipline. The strategies are based on developmentally appropriate practices. They are also based on an authoritative style of caregiving. Some of the principles associate with positive discipline is using problem solving skills. For example, Dr. Gootman suggested having the victimizer comfort the victim. This is a great way to teach children walking on the other person’s shoes. The child who puts on iceberg the child he just punched, will not only learn good behavior but, will also learn how to be a kind person.

Some of the insights that I gained from discipline and guidance include to always evaluate my strategies and change as needed. A Misconception that have been dispelled is to not stop hope when you see child cursing or using bad words because his parent does the same thing. Mr. Santini and how he guided his student teachers to deal with similar problem dispelled my myth. It bothers me too much when I see parents misbehaving in front of children and I feel bad for that child whenever I see him saying or behaving same way as his parents did. No matter what they hear or see, I learned our responsibility is still to guide children to use appropriate words.

RESPONSE TO SONYA

The principles of survey research noted in Chapter 1 of The Mismeasure of Crime textbook explores the reliability, validity, and sources of error in the measurement of social phenomena (Mosher, Miethe, & Hart, 2010). It is vivid that Adriaenssens and Hendrickx (2011) investigate a policy problem that is marred with assumptions and less scholarly evidence. The very nature of the hypotheses used in this study shows that a lot remains to be known and understood about the yield of begging in Brussels. To their credit, the researchers identify many of the influences behind assumptions that people make about beggars. For instance, beggars are criminalized and considered illegitimate occupants because of the rising rate of immigration facing many countries in Europe. I believe that this is a research article that acts as a pointer as to where future research on the subject should focus on. Its main strength is the lack of an established research framework that would help the researchers narrow down their study to have a greater impact. Instead, they choose to pursue a larger scope that is characterized by assumptions. This feature equally affects the reliability of the article.

While I believe that it provides valuable information regarding street-level economic activities, it is not structured in a manner that it can inform policy. My conclusion to this regard therefore, is that I would not base public policy with respect to beggars off this article. My recommendation would be that greater effort must be made through research to improve knowledge about the activities of beggars and organize this information through a research review. The review will provide a well-founded fact-sheet on this subject and probably offer sufficient evidence to promote and inform policy interventions. While I understand the good intent that the researchers have in studying this topic, my suggestion would be that they need to refine their focus to put their effort on constructs that have the greatest impact (Busch-Geertsema, Edgar, O’Sullivan, & Pleace, 2010). As Christians, we must be mindful of our brothers, a viewpoint that is held by these researchers. This will reduce the number of hypotheses and assumptions articulated in the study.

Suppose you are taking a statistics course and a psychology course next semester. You like mathematics, so you believe that probability of getting an “A” in statistics is 0.8. On the other hand, psychology is not as interesting to you so the probability of getting an “A” in that class is 0.6. It will be challenging to manage both courses at the same time, so the probability of getting an “A” in both classes is 0.5. Are the events “A” in statistics and “A” in psychology independent?

A) No because 0.8*0.6 does not equal 0.5.

B) Yes because the grade in statistics does not affect the grade earned in psychology.

C) Yes because 0.8*0.6 does not equal 0.5.

In this module, you learned about library databases and resources. In this discussion post, please address the following:

  • What is a library database?
  • Name at least 5 databases available through your Library Resources and how and why you would use them?
  • What databases do you think will be helpful to your research for your PowerPoint project?
  • Have you reached out to a Broward librarian for help?

Narrated PowerPoint Presentation

Social, Cultural, and Ethical Issues

For your Final Project, you will create a PowerPoint presentation based on a topic from your current field of study. Since this is a fully online course and we do not meet in person in a traditional classroom setting, you will need to narrate this presentation so it can be viewed electronically.

To assist in the completion of your Final Project, some of the required pieces are included in this course as Milestones. These Milestones are completed throughout the course by the student and the instructor will provide feedback for each Milestone, in order to help the student better the overall quality of their project.  See below where the milestones align with the Final Project requirements.

Topic:

Choose a social, cultural, or ethical issue related to your current major or field of study. Chose ONE area to focus on. For example, you cannot talk about ethics in healthcare, public safety, or IT in general. You would need to pick a single ethical issue to discuss and not just ethics in general. (Milestone 2 & 3)

Research:

Conduct a search using both internet and library database resources. You must use at least 3 sources, one of which must be from the library database. Keep track of these sources! You will need to include a reference slide at the end of your presentation. (Milestone 4)

Content:

Create a NARRATED PowerPoint presentation that contains between 12 to 18 slides. You must add your voice using the narration feature in PPT. Include the following:

Title Slide (1 slide) – includes your name and the presentation title. (Milestone 2)

Introduction Slide (1 slide) – should be something catchy and explain why this issue is important. (Milestone 3)

Body/Content Slides (8-14 slides) – must be interesting, well organized, and presented clearly. Slides should not contain full sentences/paragraphs.
Summary Slide (1 slide) – may also include a way for others to get involved, help, or get more information.
Reference Slide (1 slide) – must be in APA style and be a minimum of 3 resources. When including hyperlinks in the reference list, they must be hyperlinked. (Milestone 4)

PowerPoint Elements:

Include the following PowerPoint elements:

Apply a single theme or design template.
Apply a transition to each slide.
Do NOT use animation.
Provide at least one hyperlink to a video or useful online article.
Use at least 5 open or creative commons images (Clipart, photos, shapes, etc). (Milestone 6)
Use smart art at least one time.
Include an original graph. (Milestone 5)
Include a footer on each slide with the slide number and your last name.

Narration:

To earn full points, your presentation must be narrated. Do NOT read word for word from your slides. Slides should only contain bulleted information, but full sentences should be spoken!  The narration audio should start automatically when you start the slideshow and should continue through the entire presentation.

Submission:

Please upload your completed PowerPoint project with a filename formatted as:

NEED IN 12 HOURS or LESS

After following the instructional sequence, which includes reading the required chapters and the unit lesson, please discuss the following scenario. Imagine you are a police officer and having a private conversation with a fellow officer. Unbeknownst to you, a fellow officer is recording the conversation. You are later contacted by your supervisor and informed that you are now under internal investigation for what was said on the recording. Do you believe your rights have been violated in the given scenario? Explain why or why not.

ANSWER THE ABOVE QUESTION AND THEN REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS or MORE)
                                                      CLASSMATE’S POST
In this scenario, I do not feel that my rights have been violated. Based on this scenario being an on-duty conversation, I’m also considering firsthand knowledge that at any time inside or outside the patrol unit leads to a possibility of me being recorded or videotaped by my unit, Body-Worn Cameras (BWC), or by the general public.
When conversing with coworkers, conversations should remain tactful. Even if something is said “off the record”, an officer should always be mindful that he could be scrutinized at any point by any action. In the 2019 case of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, prosecutors introduced text messages in which Guyger made offensive statements about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and black colleagues on the police force (Sanchez, 2019). These text messages were from her personal mobile phone; however, they were subject to scrutinization and interpretation by parties involved and the general public. Many may see this as an invasion of privacy however I reiterate that being a public servant comes with a higher level of transparency and being subjected to scrutiny. As public servants, police officers should be held to a higher standard (Burrus, 2014).
If my conversation with a fellow officer leads to an internal investigation, I should be ready to explain and defend any accusations or statements that may have been considered a violation of department policy. Also, I should be able to elaborate on recorded information that may be apart of another investigation that I was not privy to.
As officers, we must always maintain (or attempt to maintain) public trust. While in the Auxiliary Police Academy several years ago, I was advised that someone is always watching and listening. I was further advised that I should always be mindful of personal conversations on my cell phone while inside my patrol unit, out in public, and quite frankly, while wearing the uniform.
