Note: The assessments in this course follow the human developmental sequence, so you are encouraged to complete them in order.

Part 1: Create the Case: Adolescence

Create a simulated case study, relevant to your area of specialization, of an adolescent who presents developmental challenges related to Erikson’s age- or stage-related milestones expected at his or her age.

Your case study should be 1–2 pages in length and it should describe:

  • The adolescent and his or her strengths and challenges.
  • A challenge for the adolescent in terms of identity and self-concept.
  • The medical, family, and social context.
  • The developmental challenges evident in the behavior of the adolescent.
  • Evidence in the case that the adolescent struggles by not meeting the expected milestones of Erikson’s theory of adolescent development.
  • Individual and cultural factors that theory and/or research indicate could impact the adolescent’s development.
  • Any other factors you deem appropriate based on your understanding of the theory and related research.

To develop this case, you should:

  • Explore theory and research related to development linked to adolescence.
  • Utilize current research on adolescent brain development to describe potential outcomes linked to brain development at this age, including important considerations in the case you are developing.
  • Develop your case study further by creating an environmental context for the adolescent. Include any specific issues that you want to explore through research, such as influences of a specific culture or ethnicity or specific socioeconomic status.
  • Maintain a resource list of the materials you consulted to build your case.

Follow current APA guidelines for style and formatting, as well as for citing your resources. Include a reference list of the scholarly resources you use.

Part 2: Adolescent Case Intervention Analysis

Research

Complete the following:

  • Research evidence-based interventions that have been effective in meeting the challenges of the adolescent you described in your case study, from the perspective of your own professional specialization (as far as possible).
    • Explain how the deficits in the social-emotional developmental domain impact development.
    • Explain how the environmental contexts impact development.
    • State the recommended interventions that align with your specialization.
    • Include evidence for those recommendations and outcomes from the professional literature.
  • Explore briefly the literature on adult identity and self-concept, considering that early influences can impact development across the lifespan.
    • Explain, from the perspective of your specialization, how the identity issues (for example, Erikson’s theoretical perspective) that emerged in adolescence could be manifested in adulthood.
    • Explain how this might help in understanding and determining an approach to working with an adult with a history of identity issues.

Structure of the Report

Use the following format to structure your report:

  • Title page.
    • A descriptive title of 5–15 words that concisely communicates the purpose of your report and includes the name of the fictional subject. Be sure to follow Capella’s suggested format for title pages on course papers.
  • Introduction.
    • An overview of the paper contents, including a brief summary (approximately ½ page) of the background information regarding the case study. (The complete 1–2 page case you developed will be included as an appendix.)
  • Body of the report.
    • The presenting challenges and primary issues.
    • An analysis of how lifespan development theory and research may account for the presenting challenges.
    • An assessment of the potential impact of individual and cultural differences on development for the age and context described in the case study.
    • Suggestions of evidence-based intervention strategies that have proven effective in similar cases, supported by citations of research and any applicable theories.
    • Projections, based on research and/or theory, of possible long-term impacts that the current challenges may produce across the individual’s lifespan.
  • Conclusion.
    • A summary of what was introduced in the body of the paper with respect to the case study context, challenges, and interventions.
  • Reference page.
    • A minimum of five scholarly sources from current peer-reviewed journals, formatted in current APA style.
  • Appendix.
    • The simulated case study you created in Part 1.

  • Written communication: Write coherently to support central ideas, in appropriate APA format, and with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.
  • Length of paper: 5–7 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title page, reference page, or case study appendix.
  • References: At least five scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journals).
  • APA format: Follow current APA guidelines for style and formatting, as well as for citing your resources in the body of your paper and on the Reference page.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

The cause of conflict that is surrounding the issues discussed in the film, is ultimately contamination. Texaco and Ecuador are in a legal battle or trial as to who is to blame for the contamination in Ecuador. Texaco the defendants, claim it is not their fault and puts the blame on a local company in Ecuador named PetroEcuador as Ecuador the plaintiffs and their community is claiming it is their fault completely. According to a local, both of his children died due to the contamination. One child stopped developing six months after birth as the other child bathed and drank in the contaminated water which caused his untimely death. Along with this information the Ecuadorian people also believe the contaminated water is the cause of their skin issues and cancer. In the arguments there is simply one side in the conflict that is claiming it is poor sanitation resources available as well and another side claiming the blame game.

After hearing testimonies from both Chevron and Ecuador, the judge ordered an end to the judicial inspections and appoints an independent expert to assess the validity of the plaintiff’s claims. The procedure was called “Global Assessment”. The purpose of this is to quantify the damage and establish the cost of what it would take to repair the damages. The independent expert’s damage assessment report that was 4,000 pages long recommended that Chevron pay up to $27 billion in damages. The report recommended compensation or environmental remediation on excess cancer deaths, impacts on indigenous culture, and Texaco’s “unjust enrichment” from its operations. Two weeks after being interviewed for the film Chevron attorney Ricardo Veiga was indicted for fraud by the Ecuadorean government over the remediation process. Seven former government officials were also charged. Along with this, Trudie Styler and the famous band Sting’s Rainforest Foundation teamed up with UNICEF and the Amazon Defense Front to provide filtered drinking water to the affected region.

Unable to see any evidence of hydrocarbons on the ground’s surface, why? Because it has been buried in the ground. It is said to be migrated into a stream ten meters away which affects the human population with diseases like cancer and skin issues. The human rights issue that were revealed in the film were the people of Ecuador not knowing what legal actions they were able to take in the situation of contaminated water.

Addiction professionals often times help individuals who will consistently deny that they are sick and often refuse medical treatment. Marge demonstrates these characteristics. She denies that she has an issue at first and places blame on her loved ones. An example of over treatment would be when the counselor keeps asking Marge “why” she is in treatment. This could cause Marge to lash out and even shut down; clearly this has been established already (Doweiko, 2015). Marge exhibited resentment and denial initially but eventually admitted that the intervention is what made her realize she has an issue (Laureate Education, 2012). Under treatment is trying to force Marge into thinking that God or some other spiritual guide is needed in order to have a successful recovery. This is not correct. Marge needs tools to help her be successful but not everyone believes in God or has a religious background. Because Marge feels like she cannot connect to God, this creates a level of guilt and feelings of unworthiness. This can create even more guilt, Marge could start to identify with the statement if only I could stop sinning; I could stop drinking or if I could connect to God or a higher power maybe then I can start recovery. This is an example of over-treatment and shines a light on the problem and increases guilt (Mee-Lee & Gastfriend, 2015). The counselor is not being culturally competent nor are they separating their personal beliefs from their professional obligation. To mitigate the potential for over-treating or under-treating client it is important to ensure that all addiction treatment entities are capable of providing adequate and appropriate services. They should be client focused and therapeutic sound. Focusing on all the client’s issues and not just the addiction.

As you have learned in the readings, extinction is a natural selection process and humans are often responsible for accelerating this process. In your initial post this week, address whether or not we as humans should be concerned with the extinction rate, and justify your decision. Additionally, discuss whether or not humans should strive to preserve reprtative samples of all biomes on the planet, and if so, how that might be accomplished.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Utilize at least two scholarly or reputable resources and your textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources in APA format. While all major developmental theories attempt to explain the growth of individuals, each theory has a slightly different perspective. Some theories emphasize environmental (nurture) more than biological (nature) influences. Some theories focus on a particular construct (e.g., cognition), while others emphasize the impact of age range in shaping development. Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory emphasizes fixed stages during which the mind’s capacities allow an individual to learn about the world. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on the other hand, is not stage-based and describes growth as an interaction between the individual and his or her environment.

Contemporary theories (e.g., Langer’s theory of mindfulness) typically build upon the foundation generated by earlier theories. Langer’s theory of mindfulness contains similarities to classical theories, such as Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, in that they both agree that development is contextual and the organism is an active “mindful” participant. Langer took Vygotsky’s theory to a new level, focusing specifically on education and the learner. Other contemporary theories include neo-Piagetian cognitive developmental theories, which attempt to address the limitations found within Piaget’s classical theory. Robbie Case, Andreas Demetriou, and Kurt Fischer proposed theories that were extensions of Piaget’s theory. These theorists added concepts that expanded on cognitive functioning within the stages of development. Most developmental psychologists today do not believe that a single perspective or theory can sufficiently explain lifespan development; rather, an eclectic approach accounts for development better.

For this Discussion, you will examine classical and contemporary developmental theories as they relate to current applications in developmental psychology.

1.      Using operant conditioning principles, how might you structure a behavioral approach to working with Ethan in a way that directly addresses his problematic behaviors?  What techniques would you use? Be specific and explain your rationale thoroughly. It’s clear that Ethan enjoys receiving rewards as he likes to get what he wants. To address his problematic behaviors, I would create a behavioral chart that would display his problematic behaviors. Each time he conducts the behavior, he would receive a tally mark. If he has a certain amount of marks by the end of the day, he will not be able to receive a reward. This method teaches him that he has to earn what he wants and to teach Ethan that certain behaviors will not be tolerated

 

2. As a result of your intervention, as mentioned in question 1, what specific behavioral changes might you expect in Ethan as a result of employing these techniques? Again, be specific and detailed in your response. The specific behavioral changes I would expect to see is Ethan displaying more positive behaviors if he would like to receive a reward. This technique would show Ethan that if he wants anything he has to behave in a manner is appropriate. This will also teach Ethan that negative behaviors do not contribute to receiving rewards.

3.  Using the rational-emotive behavior approach to therapy, apply the A-B-C method mentioned in the course lecture notes to either a real life situation that you have experienced or create a scenario to illustrate how the realization of beliefs influence the consequences of behavior. Be sure to clearly label each component (A)ctivating event, (B)elief, and (C)onsequence in your example to show how they relate and the progression of the behaviors.  Then take the ABC model full circle and include the (D)isputing and the (E)ffect of the  disputing process.
